21st Signal Regiment (United Kingdom)
21 Signal Regiment is a signal regiment of the Royal Corps of Signals within the British Army. The regiment was, until the initial Army 2020 reforms, the only signal regiment to support the Royal Air Force. It has recently reformed as the Army's second Electronic Warfare Regiment, since 01st September 2023. History The regiment can trace its roots to the 12th (Air Formations) Signals formed in 1943. Each Royal Air Force group was assigned an Air Formation Regiment to the 21st Army Group. The regiment was divided into two companies in 1944 upon moving into France, namely: * 2nd Tactical Air Force Main Company * 2nd Tactical Air Force Reserve Company At the end of the Second World War, the regiment's two companies were stationed at Bad Eilsen and Bueckeburg in Western Germany. 2 Signal Regiment (United Kingdom)
2 Signal Regiment is a regiment of the Royal Corps of Signals within the British Army. One of its signal squadrons is part of the Queen's Gurkha Signals. History The regiment can trace its history back to 2nd Company, The Telegraph Battalion, Royal Engineers. In 1907, it was designated as the Divisional Telegraph Company of the 2nd Infantry Division. During the Cold War the regiment remained the divisional signals regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division. After the end of the Cold War, the regiment was designated as a support signals regiment within 11th Signal Brigade. Because of the regiment's strong link with the Gurkhas the regiment was awarded the Firmin Sword of Peace in 2017. Under the Army 2020 reforms, the regiment fell under the command of 7 Signal Group of 11th Signal Brigade. Colerne Airfield
Colerne Airfield , now known as Azimghur Barracks, is a British Army facility just north-west of the village of Colerne, Wiltshire, England. History RAF Colerne was opened on this site in 1940, and was in operation until 1976. From 1940 to 1955, RAF Fighter Command units were based here. During the Battle of Britain the airfield served as a satellite field to RAF Middle Wallop, and squadrons rotated back and forth from there on a daily basis. Present day The site is a ground station for the Skynet 5 military satellite system that provides battlefield support (e.g. real-time imagery from remote-piloted drones in various theatres of war). Options for Change was a restructuring of the British Armed Forces in summer 1990 after the end of the Cold War. Until this point, UK military strategy had been almost entirely focused on defending Western Europe against the Soviet Armed Forces, with the Royal Marines in Scandinavia, the Royal Air Force (RAF) in West Germany and over the North Sea, the Royal Navy in the Norwegian Sea and North Atlantic, and the British Army in Germany.
