The 2023 Speaker of the United States House of Representatives election will take place on January 3, 2023, on the opening day of the 118th United States Congress, two months after the 2022 U.S. House elections. This will be the 128th speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives election since the office was created in 1789. Process and conventions The speaker of the House is the presiding officer of the U.S. House of Representatives. Hakeem Sekou Jeffries (; born August 4, 1970) is an American politician and attorney and leader-elect of the Democratic caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. Jeffries has represented New York's 8th congressional district, anchored in southern and eastern Brooklyn, since 2013, and is expected to become minority leader when the next Congress is convened in January 2023.
