2018 Yerevan City Council Election
Yerevan City Council elections were held on 23 September 2018. The snap election was trigged after the resignation of former mayor Taron Margaryan amid the aftermath of the 2018 Armenian Velvet Revolution. Well-known comedian and actor Hayk Marutyan, heading the electoral list of the My Step Alliance, was elected to the office of mayor of Yerevan. Candidates 979 candidates competed for 65 open seats in the Yerevan city council (also known as the "council of elders"). A total of 12 parties/alliances participated in the election (numbered below according to the electoral ballot listing): *1. Yerevan City Council
The Yerevan City Council () is the lawmaking body of the city of Yerevan, the capital and largest city of Armenia. It has 65 members elected by Party-list proportional representation system, headed by the Mayor of Yerevan. The Council serves as a check against the mayor in a mayor-council government model. The council monitors performance of city agencies and makes land use decisions, as well as, legislating on a variety of other issues. The City Council also has sole responsibility for approving the city budget and each member is limited to three consecutive terms in office and can run again after a four-year respite. Edmon Marukyan
Edmon Hrachiki Marukyan ( hy, Էդմոն Հրաչիկի Մարուքյան) is an Armenian lawyer and politician currently serving as ambassador-at-large of Armenia. He was a member of the National Assembly of Armenia from 2012 to 2021. He was elected to parliament for the first time as an independent in May 2012. He founded the Bright Armenia Party in 2015 and has served as its chairman since. He was reelected to the National Assembly in April 2017, leading the electoral list of the Way Out Alliance, an electoral alliance between Bright Armenia, Civil Contract and the Hanrapetutyun Party. He was elected to parliament again in the 2018 parliamentary elections, leading Bright Armenia's electoral list. Bright Armenia
Bright Armenia ( hy, Լուսավոր Հայաստան, translit=Lusavor Hayastan) is a classical liberal political party in Armenia founded on 12 December 2015. History In 2017, Bright Armenia launched an educational program aimed at advancing and promoting liberal politics, known as the Institute of Liberal Politics (ILP); it is an affiliated member of the European Liberal Forum. In the 2017 Armenian parliamentary election and the 2017 Yerevan City Council election, the party took part in the elections as part of the Way Out Alliance, gaining few seats. In the 2018 Yerevan City Council election, the party ran as a part of the Bright Alliance. Bright Alliance
The Bright Alliance ( hy, «Լույս» դաշինք, ԼՈՒՅՍ; ''LUYS Dashink, LUYS'') was a liberal political alliance of two political parties in Armenia: the Bright Armenia party and Republic party. It was formed on 28 August 2018, before the 2018 Yerevan City Council election. Its leaders were Edmon Marukyan (leader of Bright Armenia) and Aram Sargsyan (leader of the Republic party and former Prime Minister between 1999-2000). Mission Party
The Mission Party ( hy, Առաքելություն կուսակցություն, translit=Arrak’elut’yun kusakts’ut’yun) was an Armenian political party founded on 2 February 2013. In August 2021, the party announced its decision to merge with the Country of Living Party. History Its debut was at the 2013 Yerevan City Council election, where the party came in last place with less than 1% of the vote. In the 2017 Armenian parliamentary election, the party participated as part of the Tsarukyan Alliance. The alliance won 31 seats in the National Assembly. Civil Contract ( hy, Քաղաքացիական պայմանագիր, , ՔՊ, KP, often shortened to Քաղպայմանագիր, ''K'aghpaymanagir'') is a centrist political party in Armenia. It was established on 24 July 2013 as a non-governmental organization. Its governing board was formed on 9 December 2013. On 30 May 2015, it was registered as a political party. Civil Contract participated in the 2017 Armenian parliamentary election and the 2017 Yerevan City Council election as part of the Way Out Alliance (''Yelk''). My Step Alliance
The My Step Alliance ( hy, Իմ Քայլը դաշինք, Im Kaylə Dashink', IKD) was a political alliance in Armenia formed by the Civil Contract party, the Mission Party and various independent representatives of civil society. It was formed in August 2018, before the 2018 Yerevan City Council election. The leader of the alliance was the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan. Despite its dissolution as a national party, the My Step Alliance still operates in the Yerevan City Council. Democratic Way Party
The Democratic Way Party ( hy, Ժողովրդավարական ուղի կուսակցություն, translit=Zhoghovrdavarakan ughi kusakts’ut’yun), also known as the People's Way party, is a political party in Armenia. It is led by Manuel Gasparyan. History The Democratic Way Party was founded in 2006 and is led by Manuel Gasparyan, a former member of parliament and son of Manuk Gasparyan, the founder of the party. Raffi K. Richardi Hovannisian ( hy, Րաֆֆի Կ. Ռիչարդի Հովհաննիսյան; hyw, Րաֆֆի Կ. Ռիչարդի Յովհաննէսեան; born 20 November 1959) is an Armenian politician, the first Foreign Minister of Armenia and the founding leader of the national liberal Heritage party. He is the founder of the Armenian Center for National and International Studies, the country's first independent research center. Hovannisian, a descendant of Armenian genocide survivors, was born in Fresno, California to a family of professors. He moved to Armenia with his family in 1990 and was appointed as the first Minister of Foreign Affairs of the newly independent Armenia by then-President Levon Ter-Petrosyan. Zaruhi Postanjyan ( hy, Զարուհի Փոստանջյան; born January 16, 1972, Yerevan) is an Armenian Member of Parliament since 2007, a public activist and a member of Heritage board.
