The 2017 World Judo Championships was held in Budapest, Hungary, between 28 August and 3 September 2017 at László Papp Budapest Sports Arena in Budapest, Hungary. The announcement of the host city took place on 23 March 2015. World Judo Championships
The World Judo Championships are the highest level of international judo competition, along with the Judo at the Summer Olympics, Olympic judo competition. The championships are held once every year (except the years when the Olympics take place) by the International Judo Federation, and qualified judoka compete in their respective categories as representatives of their home countries. Team competitions have also been held since 1994. An Chang-rim (; born 2 March 1994) is a South Korean retired judoka. An is currently the world champion in the lightweight division. He began his rise as one of judo's top lightweights by becoming junior World Champion. It was followed by a two-year podium streak, including wins at the prestigious Grand Slam Abu Dhabi and Tokyo. He is known for his physical, aggressive style of fighting, and is a versatile stylist of seoi nage. An won a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships. Career He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the -90 kg event and lost in the second round to Mark Anthony. Gwak Dong-han (Hangul: 곽동한; ; born 20 April 1992) is a South Korean judoka. He won the gold medal in the 90 kg event at the 2015 World Judo Championships. Mihael Žgank ( tr, Mikail Özerler; born 1 February 1994) is a Slovenian-born Turkish judoka. Career Žgank competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, in the men's 90 kg, where he lost to Aleksandar Kukolj of Serbia in the round of 32. Nemanja Majdov (; born 10 August 1996) is a Serbian judoka. He was born in Istočno Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Khasan Magometovich Khalmurzaev (russian: Хасан Магометович Халмурзаев; born 9 October 1993) is a Russian judoka. Khasan won the gold medal in the –81 kg event at the 2016 Summer Olympics. At the 2017 World Judo Championships, Khalmurzaev lost the fight to Alexander Wieczerzak in the semifinals, but won the third-place match against Otgonbaataryn Uuganbaatar. Saeid Mollaei ( fa, سعید ملایی; mn, Саид Моллай; az, Səid Mollayi) was born on January 5, 1992, in Tehran to ethnic Azerbaijani parents originally from Khoy. In 2001, at the age of 10, he entered the Persian Gulf Judo School by Dr. Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, a judo instructor. Iranian authorities ordered Mollaei to intentionally lose in the semi-final at the Tokyo 2019 World Championships, so as to avoid a potential match in the finals against Israeli 2019 world champion Sagi Muki.
