2014 New Year Honours (New Zealand)
The 2014 New Year Honours in New Zealand were appointments by Elizabeth II in her right as Queen of New Zealand, on the advice of the New Zealand government, to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by New Zealanders, and to celebrate the passing of 2013 and the beginning of 2014. Elizabeth II
Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; 21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime, and was head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history. Cindy Farquhar
Cynthia Margaret Farquhar (born 12 August 1956) is the Postgraduate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Auckland. Within the Cochrane Collaboration, she is the Co-ordinating Editor of Cochrane Gynaecology and Fertility. Farquhar has over 200 published papers, with a focus on women's reproductive and sexual health. Education Farquhar completed a Bachelor of Human Biology (UA) in 1979 and a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Auckland in 1982. The following year she completed a Postgraduate Diploma of Obstetrics and Medical Gynaecology (UA), and Part 1 Member at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Hector Busby
Sir Hector Busby (1 August 1932 – 11 May 2019), also known as Heke-nuku-mai-nga-iwi Puhipi and Hec Busby, was a New Zealand Māori navigator and traditional waka builder. He was recognised as a leading figure in the revival of traditional Polynesian navigation and ocean voyaging using wayfinding techniques. He built 26 traditional waka, including the double-hulled '' Te Aurere'' which has sailed over 30,000 nautical miles in the Pacific including Hawaii, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Norfolk Island. In December 2012, ''Te Aurere'' and ''Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti'' (another waka built by Busby) reached Rapa Nui after a 5000-nautical-mile, four-month voyage from New Zealand. Timaru
Timaru (; mi, Te Tihi-o-Maru) is a port city in the southern Canterbury Region of New Zealand, located southwest of Christchurch and about northeast of Dunedin on the eastern Pacific coast of the South Island. Karen Elizabeth Walker (born December 1969) is a noted New Zealand fashion designer. Private life Walker was born in December 1969. She grew up in the Auckland suburb of Remuera and attended Epsom Girls' Grammar School. Aged 21, she married Mikhail Gherman. Career Walker began her fashion label in 1987, and opened her first store in Newmarket, Auckland, in 1995. John Richard Reid
John Richard Reid (3 June 192814 October 2020) was a New Zealand cricketer who captained New Zealand in 34 Test matches. He was New Zealand's eighth Test captain and the first to achieve victory, both at home, against the West Indies in 1956, and away, against South Africa in 1962. Early life Reid was born in Auckland in 1928 to Iris and Norman Reid. His father, Norman, was a Scottish-born rugby league player, while his mother, Iris, was a music teacher. Don McLaren
Donald George McLaren (21 August 1933 – 5 November 2014) was a New Zealand businessman specialising in equine pharmaceuticals. Biography Born in the Auckland suburb of Epsom in 1933, McLaren founded Bomac Laboratories, an animal remedies company, in 1958. The company, which held 154 patents, 55 inventions and registered 360 products in New Zealand, was sold to German company Bayer in 2010. McLaren was also active in the thoroughbred racing industry. He established Northfields Stud near Karaka, served on the committee of the Auckland Racing Club from 1980 to 1999 including a term as president from 1995 to 1999, and was patron of the New Zealand racing hall of fame. He was inducted into the New Zealand business hall of fame in 1999. Waiheke Island (; Māori: ) is the second-largest island (after Great Barrier Island) in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand.
