World Judo Championships
The World Judo Championships are the highest level of international judo competition, along with the Olympic judo competition. The championships are held once every year (except the years when the Olympics take place) by the International Judo Federation, and qualified judoka compete in their respective categories as representatives of their home countries. Team competitions have also been held since 1994. The men's championships began in 1956, though the format and periodicity of the championships have changed over time. The last edition of the championships took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2022. History The first edition of the world championships took place in Tokyo, Japan in 1956. There were no weight classes at the time and Japanese judoka Shokichi Natsui became the first world champion in history, defeating fellow countryman Yoshihiko Yoshimatsu in the final. Dirk Van Tichelt
Dirk Van Tichelt (born 10 June 1984) is a Belgian judoka. His biggest achievement was his European title in Lisbon. In the same year, at the Beijing Olympics he came fifth after losing in the first round to gold-medallist Elnur Mammadli and later losing in the bronze medal match to Rasul Boqiev. At the 2009 World Championships, he reached the semi-finals but there he lost to Kim Chol-Su. In the bronze medal match he beat Sezer Huysuz to take his first bronze medal at a world championships. At the 2013 World Championships, he again won bronze, losing to eventual champion Shohei Ono in the semi-final and beating Dastan Ykybayev in his bronze medal match. Dimitri Peters (born 4 May 1984 in Gljaden, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union) is a German judoka. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he lost to gold medallist Tagir Khaybulaev, Tagir Khaibulaev at the semi-final stage, and then won through the repechage, beating Ramziddin Sayidov in his bronze medal match. Lukáš Krpálek
Lukáš Krpálek (; born 15 November 1990) is a Czech heavyweight judoka. He is a former world champion (2019) and European champion (2014), former and current Olympic Champion (2016, 2020). He is the most successful judoka in Czech and Czechoslovak history, and was named Czech Judoka of the Year eight times between 2008 and 2015. Personal life Krpálek took up judo by chance – he wanted to train in karate, but his uncle mistook judo for karate. His brother Michal is also a judoka who served as a sparring partner for the Czech judo team at the 2012 Summer Olympics. In 2015 Krpálek married Eva Kaderková; they have a son Antonín, born in 2016. Henk Grol
Hindrik Harmannus Arnoldus "Henk" Grol (born 14 April 1985 in Veendam) is a retired Dutch judoka. Judo career Grol competed in the 2007 European Judo Championships in Belgrade, Serbia in the men's under 90 kg, as a replacement for Mark Huizinga, who cancelled last minute due to personal problems. He won gold in the men's under 100-kilo class at the 2008 European Judo Championships in Lisbon, Portugal. He was the youngest European Champion of that year, only 22 years old. After a highly competitive race against Elco van der Geest, Grol ended up to be the 2008 representative for the men's 100 kg category for the Netherlands at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. There he reached the semifinals, where he was beaten by Askhat Zhitkeyev from Kazakhstan. He went on to win bronze beating Levan Zhorzholiani from Georgia. Elkhan Mammadov (judoka)
Elkhan Mammadov (born 26 February 1982, Baku, Azerbaijani SSR, USSR) is a retired Azerbaijani judoka. At the 2008 Summer Olympics he was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 90 kg competition after losing his fight to the upcoming gold medalist Irakli Tsirekidze. Kirill Georgiyevich Denisov (russian: Кири́лл Гео́ргиевич Дени́сов; born 25 January 1988) is a Russian judoka. Ilias Iliadis
Ilias Iliadis ( el, Ηλίας Ηλιάδης, born Jarji Zviadauri, ka, ჯარჯი ზვიადაური, on 10 November 1986) is a Georgian-born Greek judoka. He was named the 2014 Greek Male Athlete of the Year. He won a gold medal in the half-middleweight (81 kg) division at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens at age 17. Illiadis also won a gold medal 6 years later at the 2010 World Judo Championships in Tokyo in the −90 kg category. As Greece's flagbearer, he had the honour of being the first athlete to march into the Bird's Nest Stadium during the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Varlam Liparteliani (; born 27 February 1989) is a Georgian judoka. He has won silver at Olympic and World level. Career He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the -90 kg event and lost in the second round to Mark Anthony. At the European Judo Championships, Liparteliani won gold in 2012, 2014 and 2016, silver in 2009 European Judo Championships, 2010 European Judo Championships, 2013 European Judo Championships and 2015 European Judo Championships, and bronze in 2011 European Judo Championships. Asley González (born 5 September 1989 in Caibarién) is a Cuban judoka. He won the 2013 World Championship in the −90 kg event. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he won the silver medal in the Men's 90 kg competition.
