2006 Toronto International Film Festival
The 31st Toronto International Film Festival ran from September 7 to September 16, 2006. Opening the festival was Zacharias Kunuk and Norman Cohn's '' The Journals of Knud Rasmussen'', a film that "explores the history of the through the eyes of a father and daughter." In a press release dated June 27, 2006, twenty-six international film selections were announced which previously premiered at major film festivals worldwide. Of the films announced, twenty-five of them will receive their North American premiere. Among the many anticipated films were ''Babel'' by Alejandro González Iñárritu, '' Volver'' by Pedro Almodóvar, '' Election 2'' (a.k.a. '' Triad Election'') by Johnnie To, '' The Fountain'' by Darren Aronofsky and '' The Host'' by Bong Joon-ho. The Journals Of Knud Rasmussen
''The Journals of Knud Rasmussen'' is a 2006 Canadian-Danish film directed by Zacharias Kunuk and Norman Cohn. The film is about the pressures on traditional Inuit shamanistic beliefs as documented by Knud Rasmussen during his travels across the Canadian Arctic in the 1920s. Produced by Isuma, the film premiered on September 7, 2006 as the opening film of the Toronto International Film Festival, after pre-release screenings in Inuit communities in Canada and Greenland. Synopsis Set primarily in and around Igloolik in 1922, the film depicts the encounter between a group of Inuit in Arctic Canada led by one of the last shamans of the Canadian Inuit, Aua, and three Danish ethnographers and explorers, Knud Rasmussen, Therkel Mathiassen and Peter Freuchen during the latter's "Great Sled Journey" of 1922. ''Manufactured Landscapes'' is a 2006 feature-length documentary film about the industrial landscape photography of Edward Burtynsky. It was directed by Jennifer Baichwal and is distributed by Zeitgeist Films. It was the first of three documentary collaborations between Baichwall and Burtynsky, followed by ''Watermark'' in 2013 and '' Anthropocene: The Human Epoch'' in 2018. ''Reprise'' is a 2006 Norwegian comedy-drama film directed by Joachim Trier and co-written, over the course of five years, by Trier and Eskil Vogt.
