2000 World Figure Skating Championships
The 2000 World Figure Skating Championships had been held at the Palais des Exposition Nice in Nice, France from March 23 to April 3. The event was sanctioned by the International Skating Union. Medals were awarded in men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing. Medal table Competition notes Due to a large number of participants, the men's and ladies' qualifying groups were split into groups A and B. This event had originally been awarded to Brisbane, Australia. However, in late August 1999, the ISU reassigned the event to Nice, allegedly due to the Australian organizers' failure to provide adequate broadcast services. There were two accidents resulting in withdrawals. Julia Obertas / Dmitri Palamarchuk, who were 10th after the short program, withdrew from the pairs event after a fall during the free skating. Julia Obertas
Julia Nikolayevna Obertas, married name: Horak (russian: Юлия Николаевна Обертас, uk, Юлія Обертас; born 19 June 1984) is a former pair skater who represented Ukraine until 2000 and then Russia until the end of her career. She is best known for her partnership with Sergei Slavnov, with whom she competed from 2003 to 2007. They are the 2005 European silver medalists. Earlier, she competed with Alexei Sokolov for Russia and Dmytro Palamarchuk for Ukraine. With Palamarchuk, she became a two-time (1998–1999) World Junior champion. Vincent Restencourt
Vincent Restencourt (born 28 July 1981) is a French former competitive figure skater. He is a three-time World Junior medalist, the 1998-1999 Junior Grand Prix Final champion, the 1999 Trophée Lalique silver medalist, and the 2000 Ondrej Nepela Memorial champion. Career Restencourt started to skate at the age of 6, having been introduced to the activity by his sister, who also competed in figure skating. He represented the Champigny club and was coached by André Brunet. He was the first French skater to land a quadruple jump, a toe loop, in competition. During the 1997–98 ISU Junior Series, Restencourt won silver in Ukraine and bronze in Hungary to qualify for the Junior Series Final, where he finished fourth. Alexander Abt
Alexander "Sasha" Viktorovich Abt (russian: Александр "Саша" Викторович Абт; born October 22, 1976) is a Russian figure skater and coach. He is a two-time European medalist and placed fifth at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Career Abt's first experience with figure skating came at the age of six when his grandmother took him to a rink. Sergei Volkov coached him early on but he began suffering from cancer and sent Abt to be trained by Rafael Arutyunyan before he died. Soon after, Abt began to make a name for himself on the junior circuit and won the silver medal at the 1991 World Junior Championships. Abt underwent surgery for a knee problem early in his career. Li Chengjiang (; born April 28, 1979) is a Chinese former competitive figure skater. He is the 2001 Four Continents champion, the 2004 Grand Prix Final bronze medalist, and a six-time Chinese national champion. Michael Weiss (born August 2, 1976) is an American former competitive and currently professional figure skater. He is in the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame and is a three-time national champion (1999, 2000, 2003) a two-time World bronze medalist (1999, 2000), and a two-time Olympic team member. Elvis Stojko, (born March 22, 1972) is a Canadian figure skater. He was a three-time World champion (1994, 1995, 1997), two-time Olympic silver medallist (1994, 1998), and seven-time Canadian champion (1994, 1996–2000, and 2002). Personal life Stojko was born in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada to a Hungarian mother and Slovenian father and was named after Elvis Presley, of whom his parents were fans. Stéphane Bernadis (, born 23 February 1974) is a French former pair skater. With skating partner Sarah Abitbol, he is the 2000 World bronze medalist, the 2000 Grand Prix Final silver medalist, a seven-time European medalist (two silver and five bronze medals), and a ten-time French national champion. Career Bernadis began skating at age eight because of his mother, English skater Donna Davies. He teamed up with Sarah Abitbol in 1992. Peter Tchernyshev (russian: Пётр Андреевич Чернышёв; also romanized as ''Pyotr Andreyevich Chernyshev''; born February 6, 1971) is a Russian-American ice dancer. With skating partner Naomi Lang, he is a two-time Four Continents champion (2000 and 2002), a five-time U.S. national champion (1999–2003), and competed at the Winter Olympics in 2002. Career Early career Tchernyshev began skating at the age of six because his parents felt it would be good for his health. He also studied ballet from the age of eight.
