21st César Awards
The 21st César Awards ceremony, presented by the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma, honoured the best France, French 1995 in film, films of 1995 and took place on 3 February 1996 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. The ceremony was chaired by Philippe Noiret and hosted by Antoine de Caunes. ''La Haine'' won the award for Best Film. Claude Henri Jean Chabrol (; 24 June 1930 – 12 September 2010) was a French film director and a member of the French New Wave (''nouvelle vague'') group of filmmakers who first came to prominence at the end of the 1950s. Like his colleagues and contemporaries Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Éric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette, Chabrol was a Film criticism, critic for the influential film magazine ''Cahiers du Cinéma'' before beginning his career as a film maker. Chabrol's career began with ''Le Beau Serge'' (1958), inspired by Alfred Hitchcock, Hitchcock's ''Shadow of a Doubt'' (1943). Thrillers became something of a trademark for Chabrol, with an approach characterized by a distanced objectivity. Claude Sautet (23 February 1924 – 22 July 2000) was a French film director and screenwriter. He was a chronicler of post-war French society. He made a total of five films with his favorite actress Romy Schneider. Biography Born in Montrouge, Hauts-de-Seine, France, Sautet first studied painting and sculpture before attending a film university in Paris where he began his career and later became a television producer. His first movie, ''Hello Smile !, Hello Smile!'' (originally ''Bonjour Sourire'') was released in 1956. He earned international attention with ''The Things of Life'' (''Les choses de la vie'', 1970), which he wrote and directed, like the rest of his later films. Featuring Michel Piccoli in the male lead, it was shown in competition at the 1970 Cannes Festival. The film also revived the career of Romy Schneider; she acted in several of Sautet's later films.
