207th Battalion, CEF
The 207th (Carleton) Battalion, CEF was a battalion of the First World War Canadian Expeditionary Force. It was organized at Ottawa by Lt Col Charles Wesley MacLean with members recruited by the 43rd Regiment "Duke of Cornwall's Own Rifles" and volunteers from Carleton County and environs beginning in February 1916. Initial training was conducted at Rockcliffe Camp at which time the battalion earned its unofficial nickname "MacLean's Athletes" due to its participation in sports, especially rugby and baseball. Additional training was done at Amherst, Nova Scotia from January 1917; the battalion sailed from Halifax with a strength of 27 officers and 652 men on June 2, 1917. Mount Sorrel
The Battle of Mont Sorrel (''Battle of Mount Sorrel'', ''Battle of Hill 62'') was a local operation in World War I by three divisions of the British Second Army and three divisions of the German 4th Army in the Ypres Salient, near Ypres, Belgium, from 2 to 13 June 1916. To divert British resources from the build-up being observed on the Somme, the XIII (Royal Württemberg) Corps and the 117th Infantry Division attacked an arc of high ground defended by the Canadian Corps. The German forces captured the heights at Mount Sorrel and Tor Top, before entrenching on the far slope of the ridge. Following a number of attacks and counterattacks, two divisions of the Canadian Corps, supported by the 20th Light Division and Second Army siege and howitzer battery groups, recaptured the majority of their former positions. Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry
Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI, generally referred to as the Patricia's) is one of the three Regular Force infantry regiments of the Canadian Army of the Canadian Armed Forces. Formed in 1914, it is named for Princess Patricia of Connaught, daughter of the then-Governor General of Canada. The regiment is composed of three battalions, for a total of 2,000 soldiers. The PPCLI is the main lodger unit of Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Edmonton in Alberta and CFB Shilo in Manitoba, and attached to 3rd Canadian Division; as such, it serves as the "local" regular infantry regiment for much of Western Canada. The Loyal Edmonton Regiment (LER), a Reserve Force battalion, is affiliated with the PPCLI but is not formally part of it. Britannia Yacht Club
The Britannia Yacht Club (BYC) is a private social club, yacht club and tennis club based in Britannia, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1887 by a group of cottagers. BYC is located on an extension of land at the eastern end of Lac Deschênes near the Deschênes Rapids on the Ottawa River. A land block owned by the National Capital Commission on the south side of the harbour is leased to the BYC. The area immediately south of the property is occupied by residences of Britannia Bay. The harbor was built from an abandoned power canal, which lay beside the club property. This harbor has been expanded twice since its original development. The harbor water level is controlled by a system of stop logs at its entrance. 13th Scottish Light Dragoons
The 13th Scottish Light Dragoons was a cavalry regiment of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of the Canadian Militia (now the Canadian Army). History Founded as the 52nd Bedford Battalion of Infantry in Knowlton, Quebec on 14 September 1866, the unit was re-designated the 52nd Brome Battalion in 1872. Thereafter, the 52nd Brome Battalion and the 79th Shefford Regiment were amalgamated to form the 79th Shefford and Brome Regiment (Highlanders). This regiment was not associated with the 79th Cameron Highlanders of Canada. The regiment was amalgamated with 52nd Regiment (Brome Light Infantry) in 1901 under the 79th's name. In 1904, the regiment was amalgamated with 'C' and 'D' Squadrons of the 6th Duke of Connaught's Royal Canadian Hussars and titled the 13th Scottish Light Dragoons. An initial draft of five officers and 251 other ranks was sent to England on 24 June 1915. The battalion embarked at Montreal on 1 August 1915, aboard the ''Caledonian'', disembarking in Bermuda on 12 August 1915. Its strength was 35 officers and 959 other ranks. The battalion embarked at Bermuda on 30 May 1916, aboard the ''Grampian'', disembarking in England on 9 June 1916. Its strength was 35 officers and 1001 other ranks.
