2025–2026 Massachusetts Legislature
The 194th Massachusetts General Court is the meeting of the Massachusetts General Court, legislative branch of the Government of Massachusetts, state government of Massachusetts in the United States. The legislature consists of two groups of elected individuals: the Massachusetts Senate, Senate and the Massachusetts House of Representatives, House of Representatives. It convened in Boston at the Massachusetts State House, State House on January 1, 2025 and is expected to continue through the end of December 2026, during the third and fourth years of the Governor of Massachusetts, governorship of Maura Healey. Massachusetts General Court
The Massachusetts General Court, formally the General Court of Massachusetts, is the State legislature (United States), state legislature of the Commonwealth (U.S. state), Commonwealth of Massachusetts located in the state capital of Boston. The name "General Court" is a holdover from the earliest days of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, when the colonial assembly, in addition to making laws, sat as a judicial Appellate court, court of appeals. Before the adoption of the state constitution in 1780, it was called the Great and General Court, but the official title was shortened by John Adams, author of the Massachusetts Constitution, state constitution. Maura Healey
Maura Tracy Healey (born February 8, 1971) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the 73rd governor of Massachusetts since 2023. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, she served as Massachusetts Attorney General from 2015 to 2023 and was 2022 Massachusetts gubernatorial election, elected governor in 2022. Hired by Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley in 2007, Healey served as chief of the Civil Rights Division, where she led the state's challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act. She was then appointed chief of the Public Protection and Advocacy Bureau and then chief of the Business and Labor Bureau, before resigning, in 2013, to run for attorney general in 2014. The 2022 Massachusetts gubernatorial election was held on November 8, 2022, to elect the governor of Massachusetts. Redistricting
Redistricting in the United States is the process of drawing electoral district boundaries. For the United States House of Representatives, and state legislatures, redistricting occurs after each ten-year census. The U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 2, Clause 3 provides for proportional representation in the House of Representatives. The Reapportionment Act of 1929 required that the number of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives be kept at a constant 435, and a 1941 act made the reapportionment among the states by population automatic after every decennial census.
