The 2024 Tokyo Marathon was the 17th edition of the annual marathon race in Tokyo, held on Sunday, 3 March 2024. A Platinum Label marathon, it was the first of six annual World Marathon Majors events to be held in 2024. Benson Kipruto (born 17 March 1991) is a Kenyan long-distance runner. He won the 125th Boston Marathon in 2021 (2:09:51), the 2022 Chicago Marathon (2:04:24) and the 2024 Tokyo Marathon in a personal best of 2:02:16, where he also set a new course record. Kipruto finished third at both the 2022 and 2023 Boston Marathon with times of 2:07:27 and 2:06:06 respectively. Tomoki Suzuki
Tomoki Suzuki (, born 14 June 1994) is a Japanese wheelchair racer, who won the 2020, 2024 and 2025 Tokyo Marathons, came second at the 2015, 2018, 2021 and 2023 Tokyo Marathons, and came third at the 2017 Tokyo, 2019 and 2023 London Marathons. Suzuki and won a bronze medal in the mixed 4 × 100 metres relay at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, and a bronze medal in the marathon T54 event at the 2024 Summer Paralympics. He is currently running the 2025 London Marathon. Personal life Suzuki was born on 14 June 1994 in Tateyama, Chiba, Japan. At the age of eight months, Suzuki was involved in a car accident that left him with paraplegia. He now lives in Tokyo. Manuela Schär (born December 5, 1984) is a paralympic athlete from Switzerland, competing mainly in category T54 sprint events. She has used a wheelchair since the age of 8, when a playground accident paralyzed her from the waist down. Career Schär competed in the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece. The 2025 Tokyo Marathon was the 18th edition of the annual marathon race in Tokyo, held on Sunday, 2 March 2025. A Platinum Label marathon, it was the first of seven World Marathon Majors events to be held in 2025. It is sponsored by Tokyo Metro. History The first Tokyo Marathon was held on 18 February 2007. However, years prior to 2007, Tokyo Marathon consisted of two marathons: the Tokyo International Marathon which took place on even years, and Tokyo-New York Friendship International Marathon which took place on odd years. In the inaugural year, 1981, both marathons took place. However, because it was not possible to support two marathons a month apart in the same city, from 1982, the alternating format went into effect. World Athletics Label Road Races are races that World Athletics (until 2019: ''IAAF'') designates as the "leading road races around the world." The classification was first introduced for the 2008 running season, upon the suggestion of the IAAF Road Running Commission. The races are split into three categories: marathons, half marathons and other. Within the "other" category are traditional road race distances, over which World Athletics world records can be set, along with some "Classical races", which span unusual distances.
