2024 Tillabéri Attack
This is a list of incidents in Niger that are considered terrorism. Background Niger became one of the main allies of the United States in the African theater of the war on terror. It joined the Pan Sahel Initiative in 2003 and the Trans-Saharan Counterterrorism Initiative in 2007. Islamist terrorism is common in Niger, but it has historically targeted the government and Westerners instead of Nigerien civilians. The number of incidents spiked multiple times in the 1990s and late 2000s. A significant increase took place in 2014 and 2015, with over 40 incidents taking place in 2015. In June 2013, between 5,000 and 10,000 refugees arrived in Bosso, fleeing and fighting between Boko Haram and the Nigerian Armed Forces in Borno State of Nigeria. Niger
Niger, officially the Republic of the Niger, is a landlocked country in West Africa. UTA Flight 772
UTA Flight 772 was a scheduled international passenger flight of the French airline Union de Transports Aériens (UTA) operating from Brazzaville in the People's Republic of the Congo, via N'Djamena in Chad, to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France, on 19 September 1989, which crashed into the Ténéré, Ténéré desert near Bilma, Bilma, Niger, killing all 170 people on board after an in-flight explosion caused by a suitcase bomb. It is the deadliest aviation incident to occur in Niger. May 2020 Tillabéri Massacres
On May 9, 2020, gunmen attacked the villages of Gadabo, Zibane Koira-Zeno, and Zibane Koira-Tegui in the Tillabéri Region of Niger. At least twenty people were killed. The perpetrators and motive of the attacks are unknown. Background The Tillabéri Region is situated in a tri-border area where the boundary of Niger meets that of Burkina Faso and Mali. Niger has been under a state of emergency since 2017; this was extended shortly before the attacks took place. Groups such as Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin and Islamic State in the Greater Sahara operate in areas of Tillaberi region. In January 2019, the Nigerien government limited the use of motorcycles at all hours of the day in a bid to stymie insurgents operating in the area. Battle Of Chinagodrar
On 9 January 2020, a large group of Islamic State in the Greater Sahara militants assaulted a Nigerien military base at Chinagodrar, in Niger's Tillabéri Region. They attacked an army post in Chinagodrar, in the west of the country, in Tillabéri Region, from the border with Mali, north of Niamey. At least 89 Nigerien soldiers were confirmed to have been killed in the attack, with more casualties suspected, making it the worst attack on the army since the start of the insurgency. The Nigerien government said that 77 militants were killed. Background Since 2015 Niger has suffered from a Jihadist insurgency in the western part of the country from militants based in neighbouring Mali. Battle Of Inates
On 10 December 2019, a large group of fighters belonging to the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara attacked a military post in Inates, Tillabéri Region, Niger. They used guns, bombs, and mortars killing over seventy soldiers and kidnapping others in one of the worst attacks in the history of Niger. Background In the preceding months, attacks by the Islamic State in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have worsened with large scale firearm assaults on both the civilian population and armed forces. In November, gunmen killed over 50 soldiers in the 2019 Indelimane attack in the Ménaka Region of Mali. A week later in Burkina Faso, gunmen stormed a convoy of buses for the Boungou miners, killing 37, although some estimate the death toll to be much higher. 2017 Ayorou Attack
The 2017 Ayorou attack occurred on 21 October 2017 when armed militants from the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara attacked a Nigerien military outpost in the village of Ayorou in southwestern Niger, killing 13 gendarmes. Occurring just weeks after Tongo Tongo ambush, a similar attack in the area killed four American and four Nigerien troops, the attack was carried out by ISGS gunmen who crossed the porous border from Mali. Background The town of Ayorou, located four kilometers from the Malian refugee camp of Tabareybarey and twenty-five kilometers from the Malian border town of Labbézanga, Labbezanga. Jihadists had attacked Ayorou on May 11, 2017, with the jihadists seizing weapons and ammunition. Tongo Tongo
Tongo Tongo () is a village in the rural commune (municipality) of Tondikiwindi (also ''Tondi Kiwindi''), Ouallam Department, Tillabéri Region in southwestern Niger, 174 km north of the nation's capital Niamey and 28 km south of the border with Mali. The village has about 160-170 huts/dwellings, irregularly clustered. There are no roads, only trails that connect to nearby villages such as Siwili, Firo, Sabara Bangou, Sinka Koira, Gollo, Gouré Tonndi, Kokorobé Koukou, and Zerma Daré. The population of the commune consists of 99% Zarma people (also called Djerma). Most of them own cattle, sheep, goats and dromedaries, renting them out to the Fulani people or Tuareg people for tending. Tongo Tongo Ambush
The Tongo Tongo ambush or the Niger ambush occurred on 4 October 2017, when armed militants from the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) attacked Nigerien and US soldiers outside the village of Tongo Tongo, Niger, while they were returning to base after a stop in the village. During the ambush, four Nigeriens, four US soldiers, and at least 21 ISGS militants were killed, and eight Nigeriens and two US soldiers including the team commander were wounded. In the day preceding the ambush, the Nigerien and US soldiers conducted a mission attempting to locate and capture or kill Doundou Chefou, a commander in the ISGS. The ambush sparked political debate over the presence of US forces in Africa and brought attention to previously under-reported US military activities in the region.
