2024 European Parliament Election In Finland
An election of the delegation from Finland to the European Parliament took place on 9 June 2024 as part of the 2024 European Parliament election. This was the seventh European Parliament election held in Finland, and the first to take place after Brexit. Finnish voters elected fifteen members to the European Parliament. Electoral system Apportionment Compared to last election, Finland is entitled to two more MEPs: one already assigned in 2020 in the occasion of the redistribution post Brexit, and one assigned in 2023 after a pre-election assessment of the Parliament composition based on the most recent population figures. Electoral law The 15 members are elected through open list proportional representation in a single nationwide constituency, with seats allocated through D'Hondt method and no electoral threshold. Proportional Representation
Proportional representation (PR) refers to any electoral system under which subgroups of an electorate are reflected proportionately in the elected body. The concept applies mainly to political divisions (Political party, political parties) among voters. The aim of such systems is that all votes cast contribute to the result so that each representative in an assembly is mandated by a roughly equal number of voters, and therefore all votes have equal weight. Under other election systems, a bare Plurality (voting), plurality or a scant majority in a district are all that are used to elect a member or group of members. PR systems provide balanced representation to different factions, usually defined by parties, reflecting how votes were cast. Henna Maria Virkkunen (; born 4 June 1972) is a Finnish politician who serves as Executive Vice-president of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy since 1 December 2024. Petri Sarvamaa
Petri Ilari Sarvamaa (born 15 September 1960) is a Finnish politician who served as Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2012 to 2024. He is a member of the National Coalition Party, part of the European People's Party. Before becoming an MEP, he had a long career as a journalist at Finland's national broadcasting company Yle. Political career Since becoming a Member of the European Parliament in 2012, Sarvamaa served on the Committee on Budgetary Control. In this capacity, he was the rapporteur in charge of several reports on the budgets of agencies of the European Union. Sirpa Pietikäinen (born 19 April 1959) is a Finnish politician and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Finland. She is a former member of the National Coalition Party, part of the European People's Party.
