The 2023–24 Nemzeti Bajnokság II (also known as 2023–24 Merkantil Bank Liga for sponsorship reasons) is Hungary's 73rd season of the Nemzeti Bajnokság II, the second tier of the Hungarian football league system. Overview After the reduction from 20 teams, this will be the first and last season with 18 teams as for 2023–24, the league will transform to 16 teams from 2024–25. Nemzeti Bajnokság II
The NB II, currently known as the Merkantil Bank Liga for sponsorship reasons, is the second tier of Hungarian football. At the end of the 2004–05 season, the tournament format was changed from one division of 14 teams to two divisions: ''Keleti'' (Eastern) and ''Nyugati'' (Western), each with 16 teams, though now it's just one league table with 16 teams as of the 2024–25 season. The champion and the runner-up will ascend to the first division while the two lowest teams in NB II are relegated to NB III. Format On 2 March 2017, the Hungarian Football Federation announced that the number of the teams in the Nemzeti Bajnokság II will not be reduced to 12. The 2023–24 Nemzeti Bajnokság I (also known as 2023–24 OTP Bank Liga), also known as NB I, was the 125th season of top-tier football in Hungary. The league was officially named ''OTP Bank Liga'' for sponsorship reasons. The fixtures were announced on 22 June 2023. Ferencvárosi TC, Ferencváros were the 4-time defending champions. Teams Changes Twelve teams competed in the league – the top ten teams from the previous season and the two teams promoted from the 2022–23 Nemzeti Bajnokság II, Nemzeti Bajnokság II. The promoted teams are Diósgyőri VTK, Diósgyőr and MTK Budapest FC, MTK Budapest, who returned to the top flight after respective absences of one and two years. They replaced Budapest Honvéd FC, Budapest Honvéd and Vasas SC, Vasas, who were relegated to the 2023–24 Nemzeti Bajnokság II, Nemzeti Bajnokság II after respective spells of nineteen and one years in the top flight. Kozármisleny SE is a football club based in Kozármisleny, Hungary. The team is currently playing in the league NB II, which is the second tier of Hungarian football. History Kozármisleny won the 2001–01 season of the Megyei Bajnokság I of Baranya County. The next season the club was eligible to play in the Nemzeti Bajnokság III, the third tier of the Hungarian football league system. In their first season in the Nemzeti Bajnokság III, 2002–03 Nemzeti Bajnokság III, the club finished 6th. Kazincbarcikai SC is a Football in Hungary, Hungarian association football, football club based in Kazincbarcika, Hungary. The team set to play in Nemzeti Bajnokság I from 2025–26, the top tier of Hungarian football after promotion from Nemzeti Bajnokság II in 2024–25. Playing in yellow and blue, the team's home is the Pete András Stadion. History On 14 June 2024, Gábor Erős was appointed as the manager of the club. In the 2024–25 Nemzeti Bajnokság II season, Kazincbarcika were in the second positiion before the last match day. Kazincbarcika preceeded Vasas by only one point. On 25 May 2025, Kazincbarcika drew with Kisvárda FC at the Varkérti stadium, while Vasas SC also drew (2-2) with Budapest Honvéd FC at the Bozsik Aréna. Gyirmót FC Győr is a Hungarian football club based in Gyirmót , a suburb of Győr. The team currently plays in the second division (Nemzeti Bajnokság II) of the Hungarian championship. History The club was founded in 1993 and its colors are yellow and blue. In the 2014–15 Nemzeti Bajnokság II season Gyirmót could not get promoted to the first division since they collected only two points in their last three matches. On the 28th day they lost at home to Sopron (0–1), drew with Mezőkövesd (2–2), and drew with Siófok (2–2). They finished third in the 2014–15 season. On 11 July 2015, Gyirmót beat Serie A club A.S. Roma 2–1 in a training match in Pinzolo, Italy.
