2023 Mauritanian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Mauritania on 13 and 27 May 2023, alongside 2023 Mauritanian regional elections, regional and 2023 Mauritanian local elections, local elections. The elections were the first parliamentary elections held after the first peaceful transition of power in the country as a result of the 2019 Mauritanian presidential election, 2019 presidential elections, in which Mohamed Ould Ghazouani was elected president after incumbent Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was not able to run due to the two-term constitutional limit. Ruling Equity Party (Mauritania), El Insaf (Equity Party) managed to secure a majority in the National Assembly and increase its national list vote percentage, in part due to the smaller number of parties contesting this election. Local elections were held in Mauritania on 13 May 2023, alongside parliamentary and regional elections. The party was formed on 5 May 2009 by Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz after he resigned from the military, to run for President of Mauritania. The Rally of Democratic Forces (; , RFD), or Assembly of Democratic Forces, is a political party in Mauritania. It is led by Ahmed Ould Daddah. In October 2000, the Union of Democratic Forces-New Era, which was led by Daddah, was dissolved by the Mauritanian Government for allegedly inciting violence and harming the country's interests. In its place the Rally of Democratic Forces was established, and Daddah was elected its president in January 2002. Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz (; born 20 December 1956) is a retired Mauritanian military officer and politician who served as the 8th President of Mauritania from 2009 to 2019.
