2023 CrossFit Games
The 2023 CrossFit Games is the 17th edition of the premier competition in the sport of CrossFit held from August 1 to August 6, 2023, in Madison, Wisconsin. The winners were Laura Horvath for the women's competition, Jeffrey Adler for the men's, and CrossFit Invictus for the team's. The qualification process for the 2023 CrossFit Games was adjusted this season, and a worldwide ranking of athletes was introduced for the determination additional qualifying spots for the CrossFit Games. All the workouts for the semifinals will also be standardized and programmed by CrossFit. This Games is the final one to be held in Madison, Wisconsin since it was first held there in 2017. The prize purse increased to $2.945 million this year, with the winners receiving $315,000. Alliant Energy Center
Alliant Energy Center (formerly Dane County Coliseum) is a multi-building complex located in unincorporated Madison, Wisconsin. It comprises of greenspace and includes the Exhibition Hall, the 10,000-seat Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the Willow Island and the Arena. After completing various stages of planning throughout 2013, it was announced on November 26 that Dane County would be awarding a $20.7 million contract to Miron Construction for the construction of two new multi-use pavilions at the Alliant Energy Center. The exhibition pavilions, which total 290,000 square feet, will be replacing the nine current agricultural barns. Construction began following the Midwest Horse Fair in April 2014 with completion set in time for the 2014 World Dairy Expo in late September. CrossFit Mayhem
CrossFit Mayhem is a CrossFit affiliate located in Cookeville, Tennessee. Mayhem was started in 2009 by Rich Froning Jr in his father's barn as a place to train. In 2012, Rich opened the original downtown facility, but almost immediately began plans to expand. That relocation/expansion occurred in 2016. Due in large part to Froning's success at the CrossFit Games, Crossfit Mayhem has become something of a pilgrimage site for many Crossfit Athletes and fans. CrossFit Mayhem has fielded one or more teams at the CrossFit Games since 2013, and the team led by Rich Froning has won all the team competitions at the Games from 2015 to 2021 apart from 2017 when they came second, and 2020 when no team competition was held. Samantha Briggs
Samantha "Sam" Briggs (born 14 March 1982) is an English CrossFit athlete best known for winning the CrossFit Games in 2013. She has qualified for the CrossFit Games seven additional times: in 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2021. She finished four of her seven appearances in the top 5 overall. Briggs lived and trained in Miami, USA for the 2015 CrossFit season, but now resides in her native England. Before she found CrossFit in 2009, she competed in amateur-level duathlons, triathlons, and football in the Northern Premiership League (as a centre midfielder or centre-back). Olympic Truce
The Olympic Truce is a tradition originating from ancient Greece that dates back to 776 BC. A " truce" (Ancient Greek: ékécheiria, meaning "laying down of arms") was announced before and during the Olympic Games to ensure the host city state (Elis) was not attacked and athletes and spectators could travel safely to the Games and peacefully return to their respective countries. Anníe Mist Þórisdóttir
Anníe Mist Þórisdóttir (often featured as Annie Thorisdottir in international media) is a professional CrossFit athlete from Reykjavík, Iceland. She is the co-owner of Crossfit Reykjavik, where she also coaches and trains. Anníe is the first woman to win the CrossFit Games twice (in 2011 and 2012). She placed second in the 2010 and 2014 CrossFit Games. She did not compete in 2013 due to injury, and dropped out of the 2015 CrossFit Games early due to heat stroke. Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir (; born 10 May 1993) is an Icelandic CrossFit athlete known for her eight appearances at the CrossFit Games. She is the women's champion of the 2015 and 2016 CrossFit Games. Brent Fikowski
Brent Fikowski is a Canadian CrossFit athlete known for his six appearances at the CrossFit Games. He finished second behind Mat Fraser at the 2017 Crossfit Games, and third in 2021. He serves as president of the Professional Fitness Athlete's Association. Early life Brent Fikowski grew up in the city of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. He competed in various sports, most notably swimming and volleyball. He swam competitively from the age of 6 to 18. He studied at G.S. Lakie Middle School, and Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. Patrick Vellner
Patrick Vellner is a Canadian CrossFit athlete who has seven individual appearances at the CrossFit Games, including three 2nd and two 3rd place finishes. Early life Vellner was born in Red Deer in Alberta, Canada to Marty and Tikki Vellner. He has two brothers, Jonathan and Mitchell. Vellner competed in gymnastics and lacrosse from the age of eight, and he also played rugby.
