The Stop WOKE Act, also known as the Stop Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees Act (a backronym of ''woke'') and redubbed the Individual Freedom Act, is a Florida state law which prohibited schools and businesses from teaching certain concepts related to race, gender, racism, and social privilege. In addition to that, it prohibits Florida educational institutions and businesses from discussing whether race, gender, and systemic racism intersect with various social systems, including legal, healthcare, education, and so forth. Penalties would include disciplinary action, including job termination, and loss of public funding for state schools. After passing both chambers of the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature along party lines, it was signed by Governor Ron DeSantis on April 22, 2022, and entered into effect on July 1. Intended by DeSantis to "fight back" against "woke indoctrination" and critical race theory, critics of the law described it as whitewashing and an attack on ...

2022 In The United States
The following is a list of events from the year 2022 in the United States. Politically, the United States continued to be dominated by a culture war, with the issue of abortion gaining special attention amidst the Supreme Court's decision to overturn ''Roe v. Wade'' with its ruling on ''Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization,'' sparking protests across the country, and eventually the world. America also saw labor unions gain increased traction, with Apple, Starbucks and Amazon among the most notable targets. In conjunction, increased attention to critical race theory, the instruction of gender identity in schools, and the ongoing investigations into both former president Donald Trump and the January 6th attack gained political attention. Mass shootings also became an increasingly common phenomenon, with 641 occurring in 2022 as of December 28, varying from those targeting schools (including the deadliest shooting of the year) to bias-motivated incidents which have targ ...

Florida State Guard
The Florida State Guard (FSG) is the state defense force of the U.S. state of Florida. The FSG was created in 1941 to serve as a stateside replacement for the Florida National Guard while the National Guard was deployed abroad during World War II. The FSG is available to the governor of Florida whenever needed, but unlike the National Guard, the FSG is trained and funded by the state and therefore cannot be federalized. The FSG was reactivated in 2022 after the Florida legislature appropriated US$10 million in funding. Background State defense forces are authorized by the federal government under Title 32, Section 109 of the United States Code. Twenty-three states, as well as the territory of Puerto Rico, actively maintain these forces. Florida law also allows the creation of a state defense force, either as a full-sized force when any part of the National Guard is federally deployed, or as a reserve cadre of officers and non-commissioned officers regardless of National Guard dep ...

Martha's Vineyard Migrant Airlift
On September 14, 2022, Florida governor Ron DeSantis sent some 50 primarily Venezuelan asylum seekers by air from San Antonio, Texas, to the island of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. The incident and ones like it have caused a partisan divide across the US. President Joe Biden and other Democrats called it "a political stunt and inhumane", while Republicans such as Mitch McConnell called it "a good idea". Background Since April 2022, as a protest against President Joe Biden's actions and policies on US illegal immigration, Texas governor Greg Abbott and Arizona governor Doug Ducey have sent buses of refuge seekers to northern United States cities with a large presence of Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party supporters. According to DeSantis, the flights he arranged were to expose "liberal hypocrisy", because people in Democratic northern cites "were so proud to be sanctuary jurisdictions", and when migrants arrived "they all of a sudden go berserk". DeSanti ...

Disney And Florida's Parental Rights In Education Act
From March 2022 until June 2024, The Walt Disney Company was involved in a feud with Florida governor Ron DeSantis and the state's Republican Party over Florida's Parental Rights in Education Act, commonly known as the "Don't Say Gay" bill. While initially a donor to some of the politicians who voted in favor of the Act, after its passage Disney spoke out against the bill and called for it to be repealed. The provisions of the Parental Rights in Education Act prohibit classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity from kindergarten to 3rd grade in Florida public school districts, or instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in a manner that is not "age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students" in any grade. On March 7, 2022, Disney CEO Bob Chapek declared that the company would not take a public stance on the bill and would instead focus on effecting change through the commercial content it produces.
