2021 Alpine Skiing World Cup – Women's Giant Slalom
The women's giant slalom in the 2021 FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup consisted of 8 events including the final in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. The original schedule had included nine events, but a race in Semmering had to be cancelled after the first run had already been completed when hurricane-force winds moved in and caused significant damage, including to the timing equipment. Italian skier Marta Bassino won four of the first five events in the discipline to establish a lead of over 100 points, which remained consistent from there; she clinched the crystal globe for the season after the next-to-last event in Jasná, Slovakia, where she finished fourth. Giant Slalom
Giant slalom (GS) is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding competitive discipline. It involves racing between sets of poles ("gates") spaced at a greater distance from each other than in Slalom skiing, slalom but less than in Super-G. Giant slalom and slalom make up the technical events in alpine ski racing. This category separates them from the speed events of Super-G and Downhill (ski competition), downhill. The technical events are normally composed of two runs, held on different courses on the same ski run. Course The vertical drop for a GS course must be for men, and for women. The number of gates in this event is 56–70 for men and 46–58 for women. The number of direction changes in a GS course equals 11–15% of the vertical drop of the course in metres, 13–18% for children. FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2021
The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2021 were held from 8 to 21 February in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. In May 2020, the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) and the event organizing committee asked the International Ski Federation (FIS) to postpone the event until 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the request was rejected by FIS, and the organizers then moved forward with plans for 2021. The host city was selected at the FIS Congress in Cancún, Mexico, on 10 June 2016. Cortina d'Ampezzo was the only applicant, and had been a finalist for the previous two championships. Cortina previously hosted the world championships in 1932 and 1956 ( Winter Olympics) and has held numerous World Cup events; the Tofane is a regular stop for women's speed events in January. Federica Brignone (born 14 July 1990) is an Italian FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, World Cup Alpine skiing, alpine ski racer. She competes in all alpine disciplines, with a focus on giant slalom and super-G. Michelle Gisin
Michelle Gisin (; born 5 December 1993) is a Swiss World Cup alpine ski racer and competes in all disciplines. A two-time Olympic gold medalist, she won the combined in 2018 and successfully defended in 2022. Born in Samedan, Graubünden, Gisin is the younger sister of alpine ski racers Marc and Dominique Gisin. Career Gisin has enjoyed success in the Swiss Junior National Championships, finishing third in the downhill in 2011, third in the super-G in 2012 and winning the super combined in 2012. Courchevel () is a French Alps ski resort located in the Tarentaise Valley. It is a part of Les Trois Vallées, the largest linked ski areas in the world. Courchevel also refers to the towns of Courchevel 1300 (Le Praz), Courchevel 1550, Courchevel 1650 (Moriond), and Courchevel 1850, which are named for their altitudes in metres. Sölden () is a municipality in the Ötztal valley of Tyrol, Austria. Geography At c. , it is the largest municipality in the country.
