2020–21 Úrvalsdeild Karla (basketball)
The 2020–21 Úrvalsdeild karla was the 70th season of the Úrvalsdeild karla, the top tier men's basketball league in Iceland. The season started on 1 October 2020 and ended on 25 June 2021. Þór Þorlákshöfn won its first title by defeating Keflavík 3–1 in the Finals. Competition format The participating teams first played a conventional round-robin schedule with every team playing each opponent once home and once away for a total of 22 games. The top eight teams qualified for the championship playoffs whilst the two last qualified were relegated to Division 1. Njarðvík Men's Basketball
Njarðvík () is a town in southwestern Iceland, on the peninsula of Reykjanes. As of 2009, its population was 4,400. History In 1995 it merged with the town of Keflavík and the village of Hafnir to form the new municipality of Reykjanesbær. Darri Freyr Atlason
Darri Freyr Atlason is an Icelandic basketball coach and sports commentator. In 2019, he led Valur women's team to both its first national championship and first Icelandic Cup win. As a player, he won two national championships with KR in 2014 and 2015. Playing career Darri came up through the junior ranks of KR and played his first senior game with the team during the 2011–12 Úrvalsdeild karla season. He retired from playing in 2015 to fully focus on coaching. Coaching career Darri was hired as the head coach of 1. deild kvenna club KR in 2015. He led them to second place finish during the 2015–2016 season and was named the 1. deild kvenna Coach of the year. Prior to coaching senior teams Darri coached youth programs in KR, winning multiple national and cup championships in various age groups. Keflavík
Keflavík (pronounced , meaning ''Driftwood Bay'') is a town in the Reykjanes region in southwest Iceland. It is included in the municipality of Reykjanesbær whose population as of 2016 is 15,129. Borce Ilievski
Borce Ilievski (born August 3, 1972) is a Macedonian-Icelandic professional basketball coach. In 2019 he was named the Úrvalsdeild karla Coach of the Year after guiding ÍR to the Úrvalsdeild finals. Coaching career In 2006, Ilievski was hired as an assistant coach to KFÍ's men's team as well as the head coach of the club's youth program. He took over as head coach of the men's team in end of November 2006 after Baldur Ingi Jónasson resigned. Viðar Örn Hafsteinsson (born 17 June 1986) is an Icelandic basketball coach and former player. He has been the head coach Höttur since 2011. Playing career Viðar spent the majority of his career with Höttur and was a key player for the club when it was promoted to the Úrvalsdeild for the first time in 2005. He averaged 13.7 points per game in his first Úrvalsdeild season. After averaging 17.9 points in 2006–2007, he signed with Hamar the following season. Egilsstaðir () is a town in east Iceland on the banks of the Lagarfljót river. Hafnarfjörður
Hafnarfjörður, officially Hafnarfjarðarkaupstaður, is a port town and municipality in Iceland, located about south of Reykjavík. Daníel Guðni Guðmundsson
Daníel Guðni Guðmundsson (born 17 November 1986) is an Icelandic basketball coach and a former player. During his playing career, he won the Icelandic Basketball Cup in 2014, and the Icelandic Super Cup three times, in 2004, 2006 and 2013. Playing career Daníel came up through the junior ranks of Njarðvík and appeared in his first senior games with the club during the 2004–2005 Úrvalsdeild karla season. He spent the following season with 1. deild karla club FSu before returning to Njarðvík in 2006. In 2008, Daníel signed with newly promoted Breiðablik. In 16 games, he averaged 8.6 points and helped Breiðablik to an 8th-place finish and a seat in the playoffs. Grindavík
Grindavík () is a fishing town in the Southern Peninsula district of Iceland, not far from Þorbjörn, a tuya (a type of flat-topped, steep-sided volcano). It is one of the few towns with a harbour on this coast. Most of the inhabitants work in the fishing industry. The Blue Lagoon, Grindavík's première attraction, is located from the town. In November 2023, in the midst of escalating and severe seismic activity, a state of emergency was declared and the town evacuated.
