Cypriot First Division (women)
The Cypriot First Division is the top division of women's Association football, football in Cyprus. It has been running since its establishment by the Cyprus Football Association (C.F.A) and its originator Tassos Katsikidis (vice-president of the board) during the 1998–99 season. The winning team of the league qualifies for a spot in the UEFA Women's Champions League. Although a Cypriot team entered the Champions League every year from 2003–04 onwards, in 2008–09 Apollon Limassol became the first team to win a point in those competitions. There is no second league in Cyprus as of 2014, thus there is no relegation in place. Current format Each club plays the other sides twice, for a total of 18 games for each club. In the second round the teams ranked 1st to 5th play off for the title, and teams finishing 6th to 10th play each other. Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw. Apollon Ladies FC is a women's professional football team from Limassol, Cyprus, established in 2007. It is the leading club in the country, having won nine consecutive doubles. It is associated with men's side Apollon Limassol. Apollon made headlines after beating two-times European champion Umeå IK in their second appearance in the Champions League. This is regarded as one of the biggest surprises in European women's football. Apollon reached the Round of 32, where it was knocked out by Zvezda Perm. 2021–22 UEFA Women's Champions League
The 2021–22 UEFA Women's Champions League was the 21st edition of the European women's club football championship organised by UEFA, and the 13th edition since being rebranded as the UEFA Women's Champions League. It was the first edition to feature a double-round-robin group stage, in the same manner as the men's UEFA Champions League. The final was held at the Juventus Stadium in Turin, Italy. The winners of the 2021–22 UEFA Women's Champions League automatically qualified for the 2022–23 UEFA Women's Champions League group stage. The video assistant referee (VAR), previously only deployed for the final, was used for all matches in the knockout stage. On 24 June 2021, UEFA approved the proposal to abolish the away goals rule in all UEFA club competitions, which had been used since 1965. 2019–20 Cypriot First Division (women)
The 2019–20 Cypriot First Division was the 81st season of the Cypriot top-level football league. On 15 May 2020, the rest of the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The title was withheld, and no teams were relegated, with the league expanded to 14 teams next season for a transitional year. Teams Promotion and relegation (pre-season) Alki Oroklini and Ermis Aradippou were relegated at the end of the first-phase of the 2018–19 season after finishing in the bottom two places of the table. Nea Salamis Famagusta or Nea Salamina Famagusta () is a Cypriot sports club based in Ammochostos (also known by its romanized name, Famagusta), Cyprus. The club is named after Salamis (or Salamina), an ancient city near present-day Famagusta. Nea Salamis Famagusta fields teams in men's football and volleyball, and formerly fielded teams in women's football, track and field, water sports and table tennis. Since the 1974 Turkish occupation of northern Cyprus, Nea Salamina has been a refugee team based in Larnaca.
