2020–21 Chicago Blackhawks Season
The 2020–21 Chicago Blackhawks season was the 95th season for the National Hockey League franchise that was established on September 25, 1926. The Blackhawks were led by Jeremy Colliton in his second full year as head coach. On December 20, 2020, the league announced a shortened 56-game season and realignment into four divisions with no conferences for the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing closure of the Canada–United States border. As a result of this realignment, the Blackhawks remained in the Central Division and only played games against the teams in their realigned division during the regular season. On May 3, the Blackhawks were eliminated from playoff contention after a 5–2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Central Division (NHL)
The NHL's Central Division was formed in 1993 as part of the Western Conference in a league realignment. Its predecessor was the Norris Division and its also one of two successors to the Northwest Division. The Chicago Blackhawks have been a member of the Central Division in all of its seasons since the original 1993 realignment. The Arizona Coyotes (as the original Winnipeg Jets), Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues were also original members of the division, but were realigned to a different division for a while before returning; both the Coyotes and Stars were moved to the Pacific Division in 1998 (the Stars moved back to the Central in 2013, and the Coyotes followed in 2021), while the Blues were moved to the West Division during the temporary 2021 realignment. Columbus Blue Jackets
The Columbus Blue Jackets (often simply referred to as the Jackets) are a professional ice hockey team based in Columbus, Ohio. They compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference, and began play as an expansion team in 2000. The Blue Jackets struggled in their initial years, failing to win 30 games in a season until 2005–06. Carolina Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes (colloquially known as the Canes) are a professional ice hockey team based in Raleigh, North Carolina. They compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference, and play their home games at PNC Arena. The franchise was formed in 1971 as the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association (WHA). The Whalers saw success immediately, winning the Eastern Division in the WHA's first three seasons and becoming the inaugural Avco World Trophy Champions to cap off the 1972–73 season. The 2020–21 Dallas Stars season was the 54th season for National Hockey League franchise that was established on June 5, 1967, and the 28th season since the franchise relocated from Minnesota prior to the start of the 1993–94 NHL season. On December 20, 2020, the league temporarily realigned into four divisions with no conferences due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing closure of the Canada–United States border. As a result of this realignment, the Stars remained in the Central Division this season and played games against only the other teams in their realigned division during the regular season. The Stars experienced a COVID-19 outbreak during training camp, with 17 team members testing positive. The team's first four games were postponed. The Stars finally began the season on a high note eight days late on January 22, 2021, with a 7–0 rout of the Nashville Predators.
