He is the first comics artist to be honoured this way in the French capital. * January 28: A cartoon by Niels Bo Bojesen in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten causes a diplomatic incident with the Chinese embassy for depicting the Chinese flag, with its yellow stars depicting the coronavirus particles. * January 29: Dutch comics artist Wasco wins the Stripschapprijs. De Kiekeboes
''De Kiekeboes'' is a comics, comic series created by Belgium, Belgian artist Merho in 1977. The series appears in Dutch language, Dutch. It is first published in the newspapers and ''Het Belang van Limburg'' and then published as comic books by Standaard Uitgeverij. The series is the best-selling comic in Flanders, but is unsuccessful abroad, with only a few publications in French and English. History ''De Kiekeboes'' debuted in 1977. Merho had previously worked with Willy Vandersteen but wanted to create his own series. The first story, ''De Wollebollen'', started in ''Het Laatste Nieuws'' on 15 February 1977. New albums in the series appear every three months, and sell over 100,000 copies each. Like most Flemish comic strips, ''De Kiekeboes'' comics are steady sellers, with most of the series available for sale at any one time. Sean Martin (cartoonist)
Sean Stephane Martin (December 29, 1950 – August 3, 2020) was an American-Canadian cartoonist, illustrator, and graphic designer, best known for creating the long-running '' Doc and Raider'' comic strip which appeared in LGBT publications in the 1980s and 1990s, and online in the 2000 and 2010s. Early life Martin was adopted as a child. His adoptive mother, Elsie Martin, who died in 2017, estimated his birth date as 29 December 1960 based on the date he was taken from a Catholic-run orphanage in Montreal. She also believed that he was born in Canada. He was raised in Texas, and lived in New York City and San Francisco before moving to Canada in 1986 and gaining Canadian citizenship in 1989. ''Doc and Raider'' is a Canadian comic strip, created by Sean Martin. Michael Willhoite, "Review: Caught on Tape: An Anthology of Doc and Raider Cartoons". Luc Cromheecke
Luc Cromheecke (born 2 August 1961), is a Belgian comics artist best known for the comic series ''Tom Carbon'', ''Taco Zip'', ''Roboboy'' and ''Plunk''. Willy Linthout
Willy Linthout (born 1 May 1953) is a Belgian comics author, best known for the ''Urbanus (comic strip), Urbanus'' comics and his graphic novel ''Years of the Elephant''. Biography Willy Linthout was born in Eksaarde near Lokeren, Belgium in 1953. He was a mechanic and a comics collector when he made his first comic book. Linthout had the idea of creating a comic strip whose main character would be based on the comedian Urbanus. Through publisher Jef Meert, a meeting at Urbanus' house was arranged. The comedian liked Linthout's idea, as well as the drawings. Linthout made the first two albums of ''Urbanus (comic strip), Urbanus'' alone. The first album, which appeared in 1983, sold 50,000 copies right away, and ''Urbanus'' became one of the most popular Flemish comic strips. So far, 135 albums have appeared. The Adventures Of Nero
''The Adventures of Nero'' or ''Nero'' was a Belgium, Belgian comic strip drawn by Marc Sleen and the name of Nero (comic book character), its main character. The original title ranged from ''De Avonturen van Detective Van Zwam, Detectief Van Zwam'' in 1947 to ''De Avonturen van Nero en zijn Hoed'' in 1950, and finally ''De Avonturen van Nero & Co'' from 1951. It ran in continuous syndication until 2002. From 1947 until 1993 it was all drawn by Sleen himself. From 1992 until 2002 Dirk Stallaert took over the drawing while Sleen kept inventing the stories. Together with ''Suske en Wiske'' and ''Jommeke'', "Nero" is regarded as the Big Three of Flanders, Flemish comics. Allan Jaffee (born Abraham Jaffee; March 13, 1921 – April 10, 2023) was an American cartoonist. He was notable for his work in the satire, satirical magazine ''Mad (magazine), Mad'', including his trademark feature, the Mad Fold-in, ''Mad'' Fold-in. Jaffee was a regular contributor to the magazine for 65 years and is its longest-running contributor. In a 2010 interview, Jaffee said, "Serious people my age are dead." With a career running from 1942 until 2020, Jaffee holds the Guinness World Records, Guinness World Record for having the longest career as a comic artist. In the half-century between April 1964 and April 2013, only one issue of ''Mad'' was published without containing new material by Jaffee. ''Spike and Suzy'' (British title), ''Willy and Wanda'' (American title) or ''Luke and Lucy'' (in a 2009 film and video game) (, ) is a Belgian comics series created by the comic book creator, comics author Willy Vandersteen. It was first published in ''De Standaard, De Nieuwe Standaard'' in 1945 and soon became popular. Although not in its earliest form, the strip soon adapted the Ligne claire style, pioneered by Hergé. This change took place when the strip became serialised in Hergé's magazine ''Tintin (magazine), Tintin'' from 1948 to 1959.
