2019–20 BCHL Season
The 2019–20 BCHL season was the 58th season of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). The seventeen teams from the Interior, Island and Mainland divisions played 58-game schedules. The 2019 BCHL Showcase Festival occurred shortly after the start of the season, on October 2–3, 2019, in Chilliwack and October 4–5, 2019, in Penticton. In March, teams began playing for the Fred Page Cup, the BCHL championship. However, Hockey Canada cancelled the remainder of the Junior A hockey season in Canada due to the COVID-19 pandemic the day the second round was to get underway. As a result, the BCHL did not award the Fred Page Cup for the first time in its 58-year history. League changes There were no changes to the league alignment or schedule from the previous season. The league did adopt a new rule allowing the attacking team to choose which side they want to take a faceoff after an icing or penalty call. British Columbia Hockey League
The British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) is an independent Canadian Junior ice hockey league with 21 teams in British Columbia and Alberta. It was classified as a Junior "A" league within the Hockey Canada framework, until it became independent in 2023. Since becoming independent, the league characterizes itself simply as a Junior ice hockey league. History 1961 to 1993 In 1961, the heads of four Junior "B" hockey teams in the Okanagan region of British Columbia got together and formed the first Junior "A" league in British Columbia's history. Prince George Spruce Kings
The Prince George Spruce Kings are a junior ice hockey team based in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. They are members of the Interior Division of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). They play their home games at the Kopar Memorial Arena, which has a capacity of 2,112. The Spruce Kings won their first Fred Page Cup in the 2018-19 BCHL season. History Founded in 1972, the Spruce Kings originally were a part of the Pacific Northwest Hockey League. In 1975, the Spruce Kings and the neighboring Quesnel Millionaires joined the Peace Junior B Hockey League, which renamed itself the Peace-Cariboo Junior Hockey League. In 1980, the league was promoted to Junior A and the Spruce Kings won the league's first Junior A championship. From 1980 until 1996, the Kings won nine league titles. Kent Johnson (ice Hockey)
Kent Johnson (born October 18, 2002) is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward currently playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League (NHL). He played college ice hockey for the University of Michigan. He was drafted fifth overall by the Blue Jackets in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Playing career Junior During the 2018–19 season in his first season with the Trail Smoke Eaters of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), Johnson recorded 20 goals and 26 points in 57 games. During the 2019–20 season, he recorded 41 goals and 60 assists in 52 games and won the Brett Hull Trophy as the league's leading scorer. Centennial Cup
The Centennial Cup is an annual ice hockey tournament organized by Hockey Canada and the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL), which determines the national champion of Junior ice hockey#Junior A, junior A ice hockey. It consists of a ten-team Round-robin tournament, round robin featuring the winners of all nine CJHL member leagues as well as a pre-selected host city. The championship has also been known as the National Junior A Championship in 2019, it was formerly known as the Royal Bank of Canada, Royal Bank Cup from 1996 to 2018 and the Manitoba Centennial Cup from 1971 to 1995. Doyle Cup
The Doyle Cup was an ice hockey trophy won through a best-of-7 series conducted annually by the Canadian Junior Hockey League to determine the Pacific region berth in the Centennial Cup, the national Junior A championship. From 1971 to 2021, the series was played between the Fred Page Cup champions of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and the Enerflex Cup champions of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), except from 2013 to 2017 when it was replaced by the four-province Western Canada Cup. Its future status is uncertain because of format changes to the national championship and the BCHL's withdrawal from the CJHL after the 2020–21 season. Canadian Junior Hockey League
The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) is an association of Canadian junior ice hockey#Junior A, junior A ice hockey leagues and teams and was formed in November 1993, emerging from the Canada West Association of Junior 'A' Hockey. The champion of the Canadian Junior Hockey League wins the Centennial Cup. The CJHL spans the majority of Canada, from the Canadian Prairies, Prairies to the Atlantic Coast. The only regional organizations of Hockey Canada to currently not have member teams or a league are BC Hockey, Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador (Hockey NL), and Hockey North. Merritt Centennials
The Merritt Centennials are a junior ice hockey, Junior 'A' ice hockey team based in Merritt, British Columbia. They are members of the Bill Ohlhausen Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL). They play their home games at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena. The franchise was established in Kamloops in 1961 as part of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and moved to White Rock, British Columbia, White Rock in 1973 when the Western Hockey League, WCHL's Vancouver Nats moved to Kamloops and became the Kamloops Chiefs, Chiefs. West Kelowna Warriors
The West Kelowna Warriors are a Junior "A" ice hockey team from West Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. They are a part of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and play in the Interior Conference. The West Kelowna Warriors are a relocated franchise, moving to West Kelowna in 2006 from Langley, British Columbia. History Langley Thunder/Hornets Langley was originally granted a British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCJHL) franchise in 1973 called the Langley Lords. The team played as the Lords through the 1975–76 season. Vernon Vipers
The Vernon Vipers are a junior "A" ice hockey team based in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. They are members of the Interior Conference of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). They play their home games at Kal Tire Place. History The Vernon Jr. Canadians, Penticton Jr. Vees, Kelowna Buckaroos and Kamloops Rockets, four junior "B" teams, formed the Okanagan-Mainline Junior Hockey League in 1961 on the advice and determination of Canadians owner Bill Brown. Wenatchee Wild (junior A)
The Wenatchee Wild were a Junior A ice hockey team. The team played its home games at the 4,300-seat Town Toyota Center in Wenatchee, Washington. The team joined the North American Hockey League as an expansion club for the 2008–09 season, and in that time they were well known for their rivalry with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. The Wild moved to the British Columbia Hockey League for 2015–16, after seeking approval from both Hockey Canada and USA Hockey for three years.
