2019–20 1. FC Union Berlin Season
The 2019–20 season was the 55th season in 1. FC Union Berlin's history and their first season in the top flight of German football, the Bundesliga, having been promoted from the 2. Bundesliga in 2019. In addition to the domestic league, Union Berlin also participated in the season's edition of the domestic cup, the DFB-Pokal. Since their foundation, Union have played in the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, located in Berlin, Germany. The season covered a period from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020. Season review Pre-season On 27 May 2019, Union Berlin gained promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history, following a 2–2 draw over two legs against VfB Stuttgart, in which Union triumphed on the away goals rule. DFB-Pokal
The DFB-Pokal ( is a German knockout football cup competition held annually by the German Football Association (DFB). Sixty-four teams participate in the competition, including all clubs from the Bundesliga and the 2. Bundesliga. It is considered the second-most important club title in German football after the Bundesliga championship. Taking place from August until May, the winner qualifies for the DFL-Supercup and the UEFA Europa League unless the winner already qualifies for the UEFA Champions League in the Bundesliga. The competition was founded in 1935, then called the '' Tschammer-Pokal''. The first titleholders were 1. FC Nürnberg. In 1937, Schalke 04 were the first team to win the double. The Tschammer-Pokal was suspended in 1944 due to World War II and disbanded following the demise of Nazi Germany. Yunus Mallı (born 24 February 1992) is a professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Süper Lig club Konyaspor and the Turkey national team. Rafał Gikiewicz (born 26 October 1987) is a Polish professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Bundesliga club FC Augsburg. Club career Gikiewicz was born in Olsztyn. Deniz Aytekin (born 21 July 1978) is a German football referee. He referees for TSV Altenberg of the Bavarian Football Association. Aytekin is a former FIFA referee, and was ranked as a UEFA elite category referee. Refereeing career Aytekin refereed his first Bundesliga match on 27 September 2008 when Hertha BSC played FC Energie Cottbus in Berlin. Energie Cottbus won the game 1–0, and Aytekin gave out four yellow cards, including one to Cottbus goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel for time-wasting in the 90th minute.
