2018–19 Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils Basketball Team
The 2018–19 Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils basketball team represented Mississippi Valley State University in the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Delta Devils were led by fifth-year head coach Andre Payne, and played their home games at the Harrison HPER Complex in Itta Bena, Mississippi as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). They finished the season 6–26 overall, 4–14 in SWAC play, to finish in a tie for ninth place. They failed to qualify for the 2019 SWAC tournament, as only the top eight teams are eligible to participate. Previous season The Delta Devils finished the 2017–18 season 4–28, 4–14 in SWAC play, to finish in ninth place. Due to the ineligibility of Grambling State, the Delta Devils received the No. 8 seed in the SWAC tournament and lost to Arkansas–Pine Bluff in the quarterfinals. Andre Payne
Andre Payne is an American college basketball coach who previously served as the head coach of the Mississippi Valley State men's team. Coaching career Payne got his coaching start at Texas College as an assistant until 2001, when he was elevated to the head coaching position. He stayed in that role until 2006 when he accepted the head coaching and athletics director position at Wiley College, where he led the team to two Red River Athletic Conference The Red River Athletic Conference is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Delta State Statesmen And Lady Statesmen
The Delta State Statesmen and Lady Statesmen are the athletic teams that represent Delta State University, located in Cleveland, Mississippi, in intercollegiate sports at the Division II level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Statesmen have primarily competed in the Gulf South Conference since the 1970–71 academic year. Delta State competes in 15 intercollegiate varsity sports. Tougaloo College
Tougaloo College is a private historically black college in the Tougaloo area of Jackson, Mississippi, United States. It is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). It was established in 1869 by New York–based Christian missionaries for the education of freed slaves and their offspring. Two human polls made up the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball rankings, the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll, in addition to various publications' preseason polls. Legend AP Poll USA Today Coaches Poll The Coaches Poll is the second oldest poll still in use after the AP Poll. It is compiled by a rotating group of 31 college Division I head coaches. The Poll operates by Borda count. Each voting member ranks teams from 1 to 25. Each team then receives points for their ranking in reverse order: Number 1 earns 25 points, number 2 earns 24 points, and so forth. The points are then combined and the team with the highest points is then ranked No. 1; second highest is ranked No. 2 and so forth. Only the top 25 teams with points are ranked, with teams receiving first place votes noted the quantity next to their name. The maximum points a single team can earn is 775.
