2018–19 Azerbaijan Premier League
The 2018–19 Azerbaijan Premier League was the 27th season of the Azerbaijan Premier League. It was won by defending champions Qarabağ. The season began on 11 August 2018. The winner of the league this season earned a spot in the first qualifying round of the 2019–20 Champions League, and the second and third placed clubs earned a place in the first qualifying round of the 2019–20 Europa League. Teams Kapaz was relegated at the conclusion of the previous season. Sabah were promoted and will participate in the Premier League this season. Azerbaijan Premier League
The Azerbaijan Premier League ( az, Azərbaycan Premyer Liqası) is a professional league for men's association football clubs. At the top of the Azerbaijan football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. It is contested by 10 clubs. Seasons run from August to May, with teams playing 36 matches each (playing each team in the league four times, twice at home and twice away). The Premier League champion secures the right to play in UEFA Champions League first qualifying round. The runner up and the 3rd place winner secure right to play in UEFA Europa Conference League starting in second qualifying round. Since 1992, a total of 8 clubs have been crowned champions of the Azerbaijani football system. The Azerbaijan Premier League was first organized in 2007 and succeeded the Top Division ( az, Yüksək Liqa), which existed from 1992 to 2007. Sumgayit FK
Sumgayit FK ( az, "Sumqayıt" futbol klubu, ) is an Azerbaijani football club based in Sumgayit that plays in the Azerbaijan Premier League. History The club was founded in 2010 as Sumgayit FK. In May 2011, the team secured their promotion to Azerbaijan Premier League after getting wildcard place instead of defunct Absheron. After securing promotion to the Premier League, the club based most of their squad on players from Azerbaijan's U-19 and U-17 players. In January 2012, the club announced that its old name was being restored. During 2012–13 season, Sumgayit narrowly avoided relegation to the First Division by finishing 10th in the league. In the 2017-18 season, they were the only team in the league consisting solely of Azerbaijani players. On 15 January 2019, Sumgayit announced they had signed a cooperation with Tractor Sazi. Sumqayit
Sumgait (; az, Sumqayıt, ) is a city in Azerbaijan, located near the Caspian Sea, on the Absheron Peninsula, about away from the capital Baku. The city has a population of around 345,300, making it the second largest city in Azerbaijan after Baku. The city has a territory of . It was founded as a suburb of Baku in 1944 and received city status on November 22, 1949, growing into a major industrial center during the Soviet period. Sabail raion ( az, Səbail rayonu) is a raion of Baku, located on the Caspian shore. It contains the Old town of Baku and the Baku Boulevard as well as the settlements Badamdar and Bibiheybət, the administrative territorial divisions no. 1 and no. 2, the municipalities of Badamdar, Bibiheybət and Sabail, and is bordered by the raions of Nasimi, Yasamal and Garadagh. Aghdam
Aghdam ( az, Ağdam) is a ghost town and the nominal capital of the Aghdam District of Azerbaijan. Founded in the 18th century, it was granted city status in 1828 and grew considerably during the Soviet period. Aghdam lies from Stepanakert at the eastern foot of the Karabakh Range, on the outskirts of the Karabakh plain. Before the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, butter, wine and brandy, machine, and silk factories, an airport and two railway stations functioned there. By 1989, Aghdam had 28,031 inhabitants. As Azerbaijani forces withdrew from Karabakh following political turmoil in the country during the war, Armenian forces captured Aghdam in July 1993. Eighth Kilometer District Stadium, ( az, 8-ci Kilometr Qəsəbə Stadionu) is a soccer-specific stadium located in Nizami raion, Baku, Azerbaijan. Gabala City Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Gabala, Azerbaijan. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Gabala FK.
