The 2018–19 EFL Championship season was Aston Villa's 144th season 2018–19 in English football, in English football. It was Aston Villa F.C., the club's third consecutive season in the EFL Championship, Championship following relegation from the Premier League in the 2015–16 Premier League, 2015–16 season. Villa finished in fifth place and were the winners of the subsequent 2019 EFL Championship play-off Final, play-offs to achieve promotion to the Premier League. In July 2018, a consortium consisting of Nassef Sawiris and fellow billionaire Wes Edens, referring to themselves as NSWE, purchased a 55% controlling stake worth £30m in English Championship club Aston Villa. The club had faced significant cash flow issues under previous owner Tony Xia, and faced a potential winding-up order by HMRC, following an unpaid £4m tax bill. Aston is an area of inner Birmingham, in the county of the West Midlands (county), West Midlands, England. Located immediately to the north-west of Birmingham city centre, Central Birmingham, Aston constitutes a wards of the United Kingdom, ward within the metropolitan authority. History Aston was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as "Estone", having a mill, a priest and therefore probably a church, woodland and ploughland. The Church of SS Peter & Paul, Aston, Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in medieval times to replace an earlier church. The body of the church was rebuilt by J. A. Chatwin during the period 1879 to 1890; the 15th-century tower and spire, which was partly rebuilt in 1776, being the only survivors of the medieval building.
