2018 Alpine Skiing World Cup – Women's Super-G
The women's super-G in the 2018 FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup involved eight events, including the season final in Åre, Sweden. Defending discipline champion Tina Weirather from Liechtenstein, daughter of 1978 and 1980 overall World Cup women's champion Hanni Wenzel and 1979 men's World Cup men's downhill discipline champion Harti Weirather, won the first race of the season and then held the lead in the discipline all season, with only two-time discipline champion Lara Gut in close pursuit until the finals. The season was interrupted by the 2018 Winter Olympics from 12 to 24 February 2018 at Yongpyong Alpine Centre (slalom and giant slalom) at the Alpensia Sports Park in PyeongChang and at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre (speed events) in Jeongseon, South Korea. Super-G
Super giant slalom, or super-G, is a racing discipline of alpine skiing. Along with the faster downhill, it is regarded as a "speed" event, in contrast to the technical events giant slalom and slalom. It debuted as an official World Cup event during the 1983 season and was added to the official schedule of the World Championships in 1987 and the Winter Olympics in 1988. Much like downhill, a super-G course consists of widely set gates that racers must pass through. The course is set so that skiers must turn more than in downhill, though the speeds are still much higher than in giant slalom (hence the name). Each athlete only has one run to clock the best time. In the Olympics, super-G courses are usually set on the same slopes as the downhill, but with a lower starting point. Michelle Gisin (; born 5 December 1993) is a Swiss World Cup alpine ski racer and competes in all disciplines. A two-time Olympic gold medalist, she won the combined in 2018 and successfully defended in 2022. Born in Samedan, Graubünden, Gisin is the younger sister of alpine ski racers Marc and Dominique Gisin. Anna Veith
Anna Veith (née Fenninger; born 18 June 1989) is an Austrian former alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medalist. She was the overall World Cup champion for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Born in Hallein, Veith is from the village of Adnet in Salzburg and made her World Cup debut at age 17 in November 2006. She competed in all five alpine disciplines, but omitted slalom as of January 2012. Her major breakthrough came when she successfully became world champion in the super combined alpine event in 2011, without having won a World Cup race before.
