2017–18 Úrvalsdeild Karla (basketball)
The 2017–18 Úrvalsdeild karla was the 67th season of the Úrvalsdeild karla (basketball), Úrvalsdeild, the top tier men's basketball league in Iceland. The season started on October 5, 2017 and ended on April 28, 2018. KR men's basketball, KR won its fifth title in a row by defeating Tindastóll (Basketball), Tindastóll 3–1 in the Finals. Competition format The participating teams first played a conventional round-robin schedule with every team playing each opponent once home and once away for a total of 22 games. The top eight teams qualified for the championship playoffs whilst the two last qualified were relegated to Division 1. Stjarnan Men's Basketball
The Stjarnan men's basketball team, commonly known as Stjarnan, is the men's basketball department of Ungmennafélagið Stjarnan, based in the town of Garðabær, Iceland. It is a subdivision of Ungmennafélagið Stjarnan. History Stjarnan's men's basketball team was founded in 1993. It reached the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla in 2001. After losing all its games during the 2001–02 season, the team almost folded. It managed to stay afloat and reached the Úrvalsdeild again in 2007 and advanced to the Úrvalsdeild Finals in 2011 and 2013, losing both times. It won the Icelandic Basketball Cup in 2009, 2013, 2015, 2019 and 2020. On 14 March 2019, Stjarnan defeated Haukar in the last game of the regular season and finished with the best record in the league, winning the Division championship and a home court advantage through the playoffs. Ívar Ásgrímsson
Ívar Ásgrímsson (born 11 April 1965) is an Icelandic basketball coach and the former head coach of the Icelandic women's national basketball team. He led Haukar to the national men's finals in 2016 where they lost to KR. Playing career Club career Ívar played for 14 seasons in the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild, 11 of them with Haukar where he won the Icelandic Basketball Cup in 1985, 1986 and 1996. He won the national championship in 1988 with Haukar after beating Njarðvík in the finals. He scored 14 points in the third and deciding game of the series, and sent it into a second overtime after scoring two free throws with 10 seconds left. Hafnarfjörður
Hafnarfjörður, officially Hafnarfjarðarkaupstaður, is a port town and municipality in Iceland, located about south of Reykjavík. The municipality consists of two non-contiguous areas in the Capital Region (Iceland), Capital Region, on the southwest coast of the country. Finnur Freyr Stefánsson
Finnur Freyr Stefánsson (born 29 October 1983) is an Icelandic professional basketball coach. With KR, he won the Icelandic championship five years in a row from 2014 to 2018 and the Icelandic Men's Basketball Cup in 2016 and 2017. He has served as an assistant coach to the Icelandic men's national basketball team from 2014, helping the team to EuroBasket 2015 and EuroBasket 2017. Coaching career Club career Finnur started his coaching career as an assistant to Herbert Arnarson on KR men's team in 2004 and served there until 2008. He was the head coach of the KR women's team during the 2012-2013 season and in 2013, he was hired as the head coach of the KR men's team. Friðrik Ingi Rúnarsson
Friðrik Ingi Rúnarsson is an Icelandic basketball coach and former player. As a coach, he has won three Icelandic men's championships and has guided his team to the Icelandic national finals a record seven times. Friðrik was the general manager of the Icelandic Basketball Association from 2006 to 2014 and coached the Icelandic men's national basketball team from 1999 to 2003. Playing career Friðrik averaged 5.4 points over eight seasons in the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild with his best season coming in 1988-1989 when he averaged 12.9 points for Njarðvík. Coaching career In 1990, at the age of 22, Friðrik was hired as the head coach of Njarðvík. Borce Ilievski (born August 3, 1972) is a Macedonian-Icelandic professional basketball coach. In 2019 he was named the Úrvalsdeild karla Coach of the Year after guiding ÍR to the Úrvalsdeild finals. Coaching career In 2006, Ilievski was hired as an assistant coach to KFÍ's men's team as well as the head coach of the club's youth program. He took over as head coach of the men's team in end of November 2006 after Baldur Ingi Jónasson resigned.
