2017–18 Central Arkansas Bears Basketball Team
The 2017–18 Central Arkansas Bears basketball team represented the University of Central Arkansas during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Bears were led by fourth-year head coach Russ Pennell and played their home games at the Farris Center in Conway, Arkansas as members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 18–17, 10–8 in Southland play to finish in seventh place. They defeated Lamar in the first round of the Southland tournament before losing in the quarterfinals to Stephen F. Austin. They were invited to the College Basketball Invitational where they defeated Seattle before losing in the quarterfinals to Jacksonville State. Previous season The Bears finished the 2016–17 season 8–24, 7–11 in Southland play to finish in a five-way tie for eighth place. Russ Pennell
Russell Edwin Pennell (born November 28, 1960) is an American basketball coach, who was last the head coach for the University of Central Arkansas. Pennell was born in Pittsburg, Kansas and graduated from Pittsburg High School. He played college basketball at the University of Arkansas and at the University of Central Arkansas, where he was two-year starter at point guard. Pennell later received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Pittsburg State University. 2017 Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2017 Southland Conference men's basketball tournament, was the postseason men's basketball tournament that completed 2016–17 season in the Southland Conference. The tournament was held at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas from March 8–11, 2017. The winner of the tournament, New Orleans, received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with a 68–65 OT win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Two programs in their final year of the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I, Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word, were ineligible for the tournament. Seeds The top 8 teams in the conference qualified for the tournament. The top two seeds earned double byes into the semifinals in the merit-based format. The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds received single byes to the quarterfinals. Teams were seeded by record within the conference, with a tiebreaker system to seed teams with identical conference records. Prosper is a suburb in Collin and Denton counties in the U.S. state of Texas. Prosper is located within the Dallas-Fort Worth area. As of the 2010 census, its population was 9,423.
