2017 UCI Europe Tour
The 2017 UCI Europe Tour was the thirteenth season of the UCI Europe Tour. The 2017 season began on 26 January 2017 with the Trofeo Santanyí-Ses Salines-Campos and ended on 17 October 2017 with the Nationale Sluitingsprijs. Belgian rider Baptiste Planckaert (), who scored 1,605 points in the 2016 edition, was the defending champion of the UCI Europe Tour. Nacer Bouhanni () won the overall standings for the second time in three years; won the team classification, while France won both the overall nations' title and the under-23 equivalent. Sébastien Delfosse (born 29 November 1982) is a Belgian former professional road bicycle racer, who rode professionally between 2008 and 2018 for the and teams. He has also worked as a directeur sportif for Belgian amateur team Pesant Club Liégeois. Career Born in Oupeye and prior to turning professional, Delfosse also competed for the team. Having previously taken a podium finish at the 2012 Classic Loire Atlantique, Delfosse achieved his first two professional UCI victories within the space of a week, in May 2013. His first victory came at the Circuit de Wallonie in Lambusart, when he managed to fend off the rest of the field and soloed to victory, having been part of the early breakaway of the race. The following weekend, Delfosse won the 1.1-rated Rund um Köln in Cologne, after again featuring in the race breakaway. Arthur Vichot (born 26 November 1988) is a French former professional cyclist, who rode professionally between 2010 and 2020, for the and teams. He is the nephew of Frédéric Vichot, who won stages in the Tour de France in 1984 and 1985. Professional career One tradition of the Tour Down Under is that the fans choose an unknown rider and treat him the way they would a star, by mobbing him at hotels and painting his name on the road. The rider must be a non-English speaking domestique who most likely will not get a start at a major race and will simply act as a bottle carrier. Jan Bakelants (born 14 February 1986) is a Belgian professional road racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam . Career His major wins include the 2008 Tour de l'Avenir and stage 2 of the 2013 Tour de France, claiming the yellow jersey after winning the stage by only a second of an advantage on the peloton after a late attack. He also rode the 2010 Giro d'Italia, in which he finished 36th. Bakelants left at the end of the 2013 season, and joined for the 2014 season. In August 2014, it was announced that he would be leaving after one year and joining on an initial two-year deal. Bakelants was severely injured in a crash at the 2017 Giro di Lombardia when he crashed into a ravine on a fast descent, fracturing seven ribs and the first and third vertebrae.
