The 2016–17 Slovenian Second League season was the 26th edition of the Slovenian Second League. The season began on 7 August 2016 and ended on 27 May 2017. Brežice
Brežice (; ) is a town in eastern Slovenia in the Lower Sava Valley, near the Croatian border. It is the seat of the Municipality of Brežice. It lies in the center of the Brežice Plain (), which is part of the larger Krka Flat (). The area was traditionally divided between Lower Styria (territory on the left bank of the Sava River) and Lower Carniola (territory on the right bank of the Sava River). Anton Žlogar (born 24 November 1977) is a retired Slovenian footballer who played as a midfielder. He is the current manager of Domžale. Dobrovo (; ) is a settlement the Littoral region of Slovenia, close to the border with Italy. It is the administrative centre of the Municipality of Brda. Ankaran
Ankaran (; ) is a town in the Municipality of Ankaran, located near the border with Italy, in the Littoral region of Slovenia. It is less than 5 km from the Italian town of Muggia near Trieste, about 2.5 km from the Italian-Slovenian border, 6.5 km from Koper, and 33 km from the nearest Croatian town, Buje. 2016–17 Slovenian Third League
The 2016–17 Slovenian Third League began on 20 August 2016 and ended on 28 May 2017. Competition format and rules The 2016–17 Slovenian Third League was divided into four regional groups with a total of 52 participating clubs. Three groups (i.e. North, Centre, East) were composed of 14 clubs, while the West group had only 10 clubs participating in the competition. On 29 June 2016, the Football Association of Slovenia decided to expand the Slovenian Second League in the 2017–18 season from 10 teams to 16 teams, meaning that in the 2016–17 Slovenian Third League season the top two teams from each group got promoted to the Second League. Also, unlike previous seasons, reserve teams were now able to earn a promotion to the Second League. The number of relegated teams from each group was determined by the number of regional MNZ's from which the clubs in all four groups were part of.
