2016–17 Maltese FA Trophy
The 2016–17 Maltese FA Trophy was the 79th version of the tournament. This version of the competition began on 3 September 2016 and ended on 20 May 2017. For the first time since 1933 the new Malta Football Association FA Trophy was unveiled. The new trophy, which is partly financed by the English FA, was presented for the first time to the winners. With quarterfinal victory over Pembroke Athleta, Victoria Wanderers became the first club from Gozo to advance to the semifinals. Sliema Wanderers were the defending champions, but lost in the final to Floriana. Format The Maltese FA Trophy was a single elimination tournament between 65 teams. The winner of the tournament, Floriana, earned a place in the Europa League. Matches which were tied after regulation went to extra time and if still tied after that, to penalties to determine a winner. Sliema ( ) is a town located on the northeast coast of Malta in the Northern Harbour District. It is a major residential and commercial area and a centre for shopping, bars, dining, and café life. It is also the most densely populated town on the island. Lining the coastline is a promenade known as the Sliema Front that has become the ideal spot for joggers and walkers as well as a prolific meeting place for locals during the summer season. Centenary Stadium
The Centenary Stadium () is a stadium located in Ta' Qali, Malta. The stadium, which is situated next to the National Stadium, houses the headquarters of the Malta Youth Football Association. It seats 3,000 and serves as the home stadium of the Malta national under-21 football team. Xagħra United F
Xagħra () is an administrative unit of Malta on the island of Gozo. It is one of the earliest inhabited parts of Gozo, being home to the Ġgantija megalithic temples, which date back to 3600 BC, and the Xagħra Stone Circle. Natural underground features such as Xerri's Grotto and Ninu's Cave are located in this town, along with Calypso's Cave, which overlooks the red sandy beach of Ramla Bay. Mtarfa () is a small town in the Northern Region of Malta, with a population of 2,572 as of March 2014. It was considered to be a suburb of Rabat until 2000, when it became a separate local council. History A number of historic silos were discovered in Mtarfa in October 1973. In the Roman period, Mtarfa was a suburb of Melite, and it contained a Temple of Proserpina. The ruins of the temple were destroyed in the 17th and 18th centuries for reusing the stones in other buildings. Substantial remains of the suburb itself, including the arrangement of the streets and many tombs, survived until the late 19th century. In 1890, British military barracks began to be built in Mtarfa, destroying most of the Roman remains in the process. Mdina ( ; ), also known by its Italian epithets ("Old City") and ("Notable City"), is a fortified city in the Western Region of Malta which served as the island's former capital, from antiquity to the medieval period. Marsaskala, sometimes written as Marsascala is a seaside town in the Southern Region of Malta. Originally a fishing village, it has grown into a tourist destination and a permanent hometown for an ever-growing population. The parish church, built in 1953, is dedicated to Saint Anne and Marsaskala's feast is celebrated at the end of July. Name and etymology The name of the town is also written as Marsascala in old ortography, and often abbreviated as M'Skala. It is a composite name derived from Arabic. ''Marsa'' is the common word for harbour (also found in Marsa, Marsaxlokk, Marsamxett).
