The 2016–17 Iran Football's 2nd Division season is the 16th under 2nd Division since its establishment (current format) in 2001. The season featured 25 teams from the 2nd Division 2015–16, five new teams relegated from the 2015–16 Azadegan League: Aluminium Hormozgan, Damash, Giti Pasand, Shahrdari Ardabil, PAS Hamedan and six new teams promoted from the 3rd Division 2015–16: Shahrdari Fuman, Shahrdari Hamedan, Shahrdari Arak, Qashqai Shiraz, Shahin Mahshahr, Shahid Karimi Jooybar. Iran Football's 2nd Division
Iranian football's 2nd division () is the third-highest football (soccer), football division overall in the Iranian football league system. Before 2001, the 2nd division league was the second-highest division in the national football league system. However, it was changed to third-highest division when Iran's football structure officially became professional. The league consists of two, 14-team groups who play each other twice in a home and away format. The first- and second-placed teams in each group are automatically promoted to the Azadegan League. The bottom two teams in both groups are automatically relegated to the Iran Football's 3rd Division, 3rd division. If teams in the promotion or relegation spots are tied in terms of points, a home and away series will be played. The team with the best aggregate score will either avoid relegation or win promotion. 2015–16 Azadegan League
The 2015–16 Azadegan League was the 25th season of the Azadegan League and 15th as the second highest division since its establishment in 1991. The season featured 15 teams from the 2014–15 Azadegan League, two new teams relegated from the 2014–15 Persian Gulf Pro League ( Paykan and Naft Masjed Soleyman) and two new teams promoted from the 2014–15 League 2 ( Aluminium Arak as champions and Kheybar Khorramabad). Khooneh be Khooneh replaced Bahman Shiraz while Machine Sazi replaced Shahrdari Tabriz. The league started on 17 August 2015 and ended on 16 May 2016. Paykan won the Azadegan League title for the second time in their history. Paykan, Machine Sazi and Sanat Naft were promoted to the Persian Gulf Pro League. The article contains information about the 2015–16 Iran Iran Football's 3rd Division, 3rd Division football season. This is the 4th rated football league in Iran after the Persian Gulf Cup, Azadegan League, and Iran Football's 2nd Division, 2nd Division. The league started from September 2015.
