The 2016–17 Hamburger SV season was the 129th season in the club's football history. In 2016–17 the club played in the Bundesliga, the top tier of German football. It was the club's 54th consecutive season in this league, being the only club to have played every season in the Bundesliga since its introduction in 1963. Hamburger SV
Hamburger Sport-Verein e.V. (), commonly known as Hamburger SV () or Hamburg (), or HSV (), is a German sports club based in Hamburg, with its largest branch being its Association football, football department. Though the current HSV was founded in June 1919 from a merger of three earlier clubs, it traces its origins to 29 September 1887 when the first of the predecessors, SC Germania Hamburg, SC Germania, was founded. HSV has won the Bundesliga, German national championship six times, the DFB-Pokal three times and the former DFL-Ligapokal, League Cup twice. The team's most successful period was from the mid-1970s until the mid-1980s when, in addition to several domestic honours, they won the 1976–77 European Cup Winners' Cup and the 1982–83 European Cup. Mërgim Mavraj
Mërgim Mustafë Mavraj (born 9 June 1986) is a former professional footballer who played as a centre-back. Born in Germany, he represented the Albania national team from 2012 until 2020. Mavraj previously played for Germany U21 team, as well as spending his professional career in Germany, his place of birth, from 2005 to 2018 and again from 2019. Walace Souza Silva (born 4 April 1995), or simply Walace (), is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club Cruzeiro. Lewis Harry Holtby (born 18 September 1990) is a German professional footballer who most recently played as a midfielder for and captained Holstein Kiel. Holtby began his professional career with Alemannia Aachen before signing for Schalke 04 two years later. Dennis Diekmeier (born 20 October 1989) is a German professional Association football, football Manager (association football), manager of SV Sandhausen and former player. A right-back during his playing days, Diekmeier came through the ranks of SV Werder Bremen, Werder Bremen before moving to 1. FC Nürnberg in 2009. His form there led him to being named to one of the best full-backs in the league, after which he joined Hamburger SV in July 2010, where he enjoyed a successful eight-year spell.
