2016–17 Colchester United F.C. Season
The 2016–17 season was Colchester United F.C., Colchester United's 80th season in their history and their first season competing in EFL League Two, League Two following their relegation from EFL League One, League One in the 2015–16 Colchester United F.C. season, 2015–16 season. It was their first season in the fourth tier of English football for 18-years. Along with competing in League Two, the club also participated in the FA Cup, EFL Cup and EFL Trophy. Distinct changes in form and a series of lengthy squad injuries dictated Colchester's season. Many first-team players found themselves ruled out by injury, including Matthew Briggs, Kurtis Guthrie, Denny Johnstone, Frankie Kent, Lewis Kinsella, Doug Loft, Luke Prosser, Craig Slater, and Sammie Szmodics. Colchester ( ) is a city in northeastern Essex, England. It is the second-largest settlement in the county, with a population of 130,245 at the 2021 Census. The demonym is ''Colcestrian''. Joseph Robert Edwards (born 31 October 1990) is an English professional footballer and coach, who plays for and captains side Plymouth Argyle, as a full-back or midfielder. Edwards began his career with Aston Villa and then Bristol City, where he rose through the youth ranks to graduate from the club's academy. He made his professional debut for the club in February 2011 following a loan spell at Conference Premier side Bath City. He was again loaned out in the 2011–12 season to Stockport County and Yeovil Town. Following a second loan spell with Yeovil in the 2012–13 season, he joined the club permanently in January 2013. Darren Ambrose
Darren Paul Francis Ambrose (born 29 February 1984) is an English retired professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Ambrose began his career with Ipswich Town when he joined the club's Academy at the age of eleven. He broke through to the first-team in April 2002 in a 2–0 Premiership defeat to Arsenal. After establishing himself as a regular during the 2002–03 season, Ambrose was sold to Newcastle United for £1 million. Sammie Szmodics
Samuel Joseph Szmodics (, born 24 September 1995) is a professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder or forward for club Ipswich Town. Born in England, he plays for the Republic of Ireland national team. An academy product of hometown club Colchester United, he made his professional debut in 2013, going on to score 38 goals in 162 appearances for the club before departing in 2019. Craig Slater (born 26 April 1994) is a Scottish professional football player and coach. He plays as a midfielder for Forfar Athletic, and is also first team coach at Scottish Women's Premier League team Motherwell. Slater began his career at St Mirren but left in 2012 to join Kilmarnock. He made his professional debut in December 2012 and went on to spend four years at the club, making 85 appearances. Luke Barrie Prosser (born 28 May 1988) is an English former professional footballer last played as a defender. He scored 17 goals in 423 league and cup appearances in a 15-year career. A product of the Tottenham Hotspur youth academy, Prosser joined Port Vale in 2005. He spent five years at the club, also spending time on loan at Leigh RMI, Salisbury City, and Kidderminster Harriers. Douglas James Loft (born 25 December 1986) is an English former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He made 430 league and cup appearances in an 18-year career, scoring 32 goals. Frankie James Kent (born 21 November 1995) is an English professional footballer who plays as a centre back for side Heart of Midlothian. Kent progressed through the Arsenal Academy prior to joining Colchester United's Academy for his two-year scholarship in 2012. Denny Johnstone (born 9 January 1995) is a Scottish professional footballer who last played as a striker for Scottish League One club Dumbarton. Kurtis Owen Guthrie (born 21 April 1993) is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward for club Queen of the South. He won a bronze medal for Jersey at the 2011 Island Games.
