2016–17 Azerbaijan First Division
The 2016–17 Azerbaijan First Division was the 25th season of the second level of football in Azerbaijan. Neftchala FK were the defending champions. Teams No team was promoted from the 2015–16 Azerbaijan First Division, 2015–16 season, whilst Ravan Baku FK, Ravan Baku dropped back to the First Division. Azerbaijan First Division
The Azerbaijan First League () is the second highest professional division in Azerbaijani professional football. The league is run by AFFA. The winner promotes to Premier Division. History Due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, all Azerbaijan clubs of the former Soviet Premier Division and Soviet First Division conformed a single Azerbaijan Premier League, which meant that the new second tier of Azerbaijan football would remain regionalized. For the first two seasons three regional groups conformed the second tier, until in 1994 the single table in use today began to be used. Competition format The First League currently consists of 10 teams. All teams play each other three times. FK Shamkir
Shamkir Football Club () is an Azerbaijani football club based in Şəmkir, that currently plays in the Azerbaijan First Division. The club is one of the oldest and most successful clubs in Azerbaijan's football history with two Azerbaijan Premier League titles. History The club was established in 1954, even though it never participated in any Soviet football league. It was re-established in 1993. Shamkir's most successful years were at the start of the 2000s, after Shahbaz Suleymanov's takeover, the club with Agaselim Mirjavadov consecutively won three Azerbaijan Premier League titles and reached the final of Azerbaijan Cup three times. The club also became the first Azerbaijani team to pass the qualifying stage of Champions League. In 2005, the club was briefly defunct due to sponsorship reasons but re-established once again on 19 August 2009 after finding sponsors. Imishli (city)
Imishli () is a city and the capital of the Imishli District of Azerbaijan. History During the Tsardom of Russia, Qaradonlu belonged to the Javad Khan administration. In 1906, the first School of Qaradonlu region was established, with many living-buildings, caravanserais, mills and shops in the area. In August 1930, Qaradonlu was organized in Mil-Mugan as a region. As early as the October Revolution, land-reclamation and irrigation work were made based on the intense irrigated plant-growing. In 1933, Qaradonlu Machine-Tractor Plant was built in the Qaradonlu historical region. As a result of the construction of the railway between Ələt and Yerevan, people moved from the center of the region to suburbs of the railway stations. Mingachevir ( ) is the fourth largest city in Azerbaijan with a population of about 106,000. It is often called the "city of lights" because of its hydroelectric power station on the Kura (South Caucasus river), Kura River, which divides the city down the middle.
