2016 BDO World Darts Championship
The 2016 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship was the 39th BDO World Darts Championship, World Championship organised by the British Darts Organisation, and the 31st staging at the Lakeside Leisure Complex, Lakeside Country Club at Frimley Green. The defending men's champion was Scott Mitchell (darts player), Scott Mitchell, who won his first world title in 2015 BDO World Darts Championship, 2015, but lost in the Quarter-finals to Richard Veenstra. 2013 world champion Scott Waites won the title by defeating Jeff Smith (darts player), Jeff Smith 7–1 in the final. Lisa Ashton was the defending women's champion, having won the previous two editions, but lost to Trina Gulliver in the Quarter-finals. Gulliver then went on to win her 10th world championship title after defeating Deta Hedman 3–2 in the final. Lakeside Leisure Complex
The Lakeside Leisure Complex is a hotel, conferencing, entertainment and associated leisure complex in Frimley Green in west Surrey, England. It hosted the open/men's and women's BDO World Darts Championship every January from 1986 to 2019. History The complex was established in 1972, when Bob Potter bought Wharfenden House and the surrounding grounds and lake. He soon doubled the hall to 1,000 seats principally for hosting comedians and musicians, including North American and internationally acclaimed acts. Lakeside was almost completely destroyed in a fire in November 1978, but was subsequently rebuilt, reopening in October the following year. During the 25th year of hosting the 2010 BDO World Darts Championship, World Darts Championship, in 2010 the lake had largely iced over by 7 January. Vladimir Andersen
Vladimir Kim Andersen (born 24 April 1989) is a Danish professional darts player. Career He partnered Per Laursen in the 2010 World Cup of Darts losing in the first round to Austria. He won the German Gold Cup and Dortmund Open in 2012, beating respectively Tobias Muller and Dominik Wiegmann. At the 2012 Nordic Invitational, he won the pairs event together with Frede Johansen beating Daniel Larsson and Johan Engström from Sweden in the final. Ross Montgomery
Ross Montgomery (born 16 October 1962), nicknamed The Boss, is a Scottish former professional darts player who competes in World Seniors Darts (WSD) events. He formerly participated in both World Darts Federation (WDF) and Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. He is the reigning World Seniors Darts Champion, having won the 2025 World Seniors Championship. Montgomery won three British Darts Organisation (BDO) major titles: the 2010 Zuiderduin Masters, and the Dutch Open in both 2014 and 2020. He finished as runner-up at the 2014 BDO World Trophy. Brian "Doggy" Dawson (born 12 December 1968) is an English professional darts player currently playing in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. Gary Robson (darts Player)
Gary "Big Robbo" Robson (born 19 June 1967) is an English professional darts player who plays in World Darts Federation events. Career Robson qualified twice for the World Championships, but was beaten in the first round on each occasion. He made it for a third time in 2004, but found himself 2–0 down in sets against Steve Coote. However, Robson recovered and took the match to a sudden death deciding leg, which he won. Bobby George commented that "you won't see browner darts in this tournament than that match". Robson had another excellent performance in losing to 'Silverback' Tony O'Shea in the second round. Robson's biggest tournament win so far was at the World Darts Trophy in Utrecht, Netherlands. Jim Williams (born 27 July 1984) is a Welsh professional darts player who competes in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. He won his first ranking PDC title at 2022 Players Championship 6. Williams previously competed in British Darts Organisation (BDO) tournaments. He won the 2019 BDO World Trophy and finished as the runner-up at the 2020 BDO World Championship. Mark McGeeney (born 28 June 1972) is an English professional darts player who competes in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. He previously played in British Darts Organisation (BDO) tournaments, where he won the Dutch Open on two occasions and was the runner-up at the 2018 BDO World Championship and the World Masters in both 2016 and 2017. Martin Phillips (darts Player)
Martin Phillips (born 30 April 1960) is a Welsh former professional darts player who competed in the British Darts Organisation (BDO). He won the 2014 World Masters championship. Darts career 1988–1994 Phillips was born in Dolgellau, and made his first televised darts appearance at the 1988 British Professional Championship reaching the last 16. In 1991, he appeared at his first World Championship losing in the first round to the defending champion Phil Taylor. In 1992 he defeated the Dutchman Bert Vlaardingerbroek 3–0 in the first round and knocked out five-time world champion Eric Bristow 3–2 in the second round to reach the quarter-final where he was defeated again by Taylor, who went on to clinch his second World title. Geert De Vos
Geert De Vos (born 6 October 1981) is a Belgian darts player. His nickname is "Foxy". Career In 2012, De Vos qualified for the first time for BDO World Darts Championship; this performance led to a wildcard for the Zuiderduin Masters. During this tournament, he lost his first match against the eventual winner Scott Waites 5–3. During the World Championship, De Vos played Tony West, the eleventh seed. Darryl Fitton
Darryl Fitton (born 5 May 1962) is a former English professional darts player. He was nicknamed The Dazzler and worked as an undertaker before embarking on his darts career. Fitton won the 2009 Finder Masters and the 2016 BDO World Trophy. He was also a three-time BDO World Championship semi-finalist, the runner-up at the 2007 World Masters, and a quarter-finalist at the 2008 Grand Slam of Darts. Wesley Harms
Wesley Harms (born 11 June 1984) is a former Dutch professional darts player. Career Harms won the BDO International Open in 2011, defeating Stephen Bunting in the final. Harms qualified for the 2012 BDO World Darts Championship as the 13th seed. He defeated Martin Phillips, Robbie Green, and fellow débutant Paul Jennings to reach the semi-final where he was defeated 6–5 by Tony O'Shea. Harms's performance, followed by subsequent strong runs in the coming months, saw him briefly top the WDF world rankings. Jamie Hughes (born 27 February 1986) is an English professional darts player who competes in Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) events. Hughes formerly played in British Darts Organisation (BDO) events, winning the 2014 Finder Darts Masters.
