2015–16 Maltese Second Division
The 2015–16 Maltese Second Division started in September 2015 and ended in May 2016. Msida Saint-Joseph F.C., Kirkop United F.C. and Żurrieq F.C. were relegated to the Maltese Third Division. Marsa F.C., Sirens F.C. and Gharghur F.C. were promoted to the Maltese First Division. Marsa were crowned champions in the last game against Gharghur as they won 2–1. Additionally, Sirens lost the Derby against Mgarr United and handed the cup to the champions Marsa. Msida Saint-Joseph F
Msida (, ) is a harbour town in the Eastern Region of Malta with a population of 7,623 (2021). Location The town is located just west of Valletta on the northeast coast of Malta. The neighbouring towns of Msida are Ta' Xbiex, Gżira, San Ä wann, Birkirkara, Santa Venera, Ħamrun and Pietà . Msida is an important town for travellers as many bus routes pass through it. Etymology The name Msida is said to originate from an Arabic word, meaning "a fisherman's dwelling". However it could also have been derived from the word 'Omm Sidna', meaning 'The Mother of Our Lord' since there could have been a small chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. Church and traditions The patron saint of Msida is Saint Joseph while the protector is The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Swieqi United F
Swieqi () is a town in the Eastern Region of Malta. It is a residential area just 15 minutes by bus from Sliema and within walking distance of Malta's nightlife and entertainment centres, Paceville and St. Julian's. As the town developed, residential estates took over farmland. The town's name means "water channels", a reminder of the region's past. It has an estimated population of 14,452 as of 1 January 2019. Mellieħa ( ) is a large village in the Northern Region, Malta, Northern Region of Malta. It has a population of 10,087 as of March 2014. Mellieħa is also a tourist resort, popular for its sandy beaches, natural environment, and Popeye Village nearby. Etymology The name ''Mellieħa'' is derived from the Semitic root ''m-l-ħ'', which means ''salt''. Birżebbuġa St
Birżebbuġa (; sometimes shortened to B'Buġa) is a seaside town in the Southern Region of Malta, close to Marsaxlokk. It is approximately from the capital Valletta, and has a population of 9,736 as of March 2014. The town is popular among Maltese holidaymakers, and is known for its sandy beach, Pretty Bay. Żabbar ( ), also known as Città Hompesch, is a city in the Port Region of Malta. It is the seventh largest city in the country, with an estimated population of 15,648 as of January 2021. Originally a part of Żejtun, Żabbar was granted the title of ''Città Hompesch'' by the last of the Grand Masters of the Order of St. John to reign in Malta, Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim. Etymology The name of the city probably derives from the Maltese word ''tiżbor'', the process of pruning trees. Indeed, a number of families who specialised in pruning, ''żbir'', are known to have lived in the vicinity of this village during the Middle Ages. Other possibilities of this derivation exist. Qrendi F
Qrendi () is a village in the Western Region of Malta, with a population of 3,148 people as of October 2021. It is located close to Mqabba, Żurrieq and Siġġiewi. Within its boundaries are the two Neolithic temples of Mnajdra and Ħaġar Qim. Two annual feasts are held in Qrendi: the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated either on the last Sunday of June or the first Sunday of July, and the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lady on 15 August. Although the majority of the village's old core buildings remain today, Qrendi has changed considerably in recent times.
