2014 Kilkenny County Council Election
An election to all 24 seats on Kilkenny County Council took place on 23 May 2014 as part of the 2014 Irish local elections, a reduction from 26 seats at the 2009 election. County Kilkenny was divided into 3 local electoral areas to elect councillors for a five-year term of office on the electoral system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). In addition, Kilkenny Borough Council was abolished. Fianna Fáil became the largest party securing 10 seats, a gain of 3. Fine Gael, by contrast, had a very poor set of results and lost 5 of their seats returning with 7 seats in all. Sinn Féin broke through in the county winning 3 seats, while Labour retained just 2 seats on the council. Kilkenny County Council
Kilkenny County Council () is the local authority of County Kilkenny, Ireland. As a county council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation, urban planning and development, amenity and culture, and environment. The council has 24 elected members. The single transferable vote (STV) or proportional-ranked choice voting (P-RCV) is a multi-winner electoral system in which each voter casts a single vote in the form of a ranked ballot. Voters have the option to rank candidates, and their vote may be transferred according to alternative preferences if their preferred candidate is eliminated or elected with surplus votes, so that their vote is used to elect someone they prefer over others in the running. Kathleen Funchion (born 22 April 1981) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Ireland for the South constituency since July 2024. She was previously a Teachta Dála (TD) for Carlow–Kilkenny from the 2016 general election to 2024. She was Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Children, Disabilities, Integration and Equality. 'Ramie Leahy is an Irish artist known for his use of color and as a co-founder of the Kilkenny Arts Festival. Leahy attended primary school in Kilkenny and later studied painting and sculpture at various art institutions in Ireland. He received a scholarship to study visual arts in Florence, Italy where he created a series of political works about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Daithí Holohan
Daithí Holohan (born 1956) is an Irish artist from Kilkenny. Specialising in portraiture, he also does landscape and still life. Holohan studied Fine Art Painting at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1978. Campbell Bruce, former NCAD Professor of Painting, said of his work: "Firstly the psychological interaction between artist and sitter is revealed. Peter Cleere (born 1982/1983) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Carlow–Kilkenny constituency since the 2024 general election. He is a former inter-county hurler, who played as a right corner-forward for the Kilkenny senior team. Sports Cleere made his first appearance for the Kilkenny senior team during the 2004 Walsh Cup, and became a regular member of the team and panel over the following four seasons. Proportional Representation
Proportional representation (PR) refers to any electoral system under which subgroups of an electorate are reflected proportionately in the elected body. The concept applies mainly to political divisions (Political party, political parties) among voters. The aim of such systems is that all votes cast contribute to the result so that each representative in an assembly is mandated by a roughly equal number of voters, and therefore all votes have equal weight.
