Competition format The 7.5 kilometres sprint race is the third oldest biathlon event; the distance is skied over three laps. The biathlete shoots two times at any shooting lane, first prone, then standing, totalling 10 targets. For each missed target the biathlete has to complete a penalty lap of around 150 metres. The 2012–13 Biathlon World Cup was a multi-race tournament over a season of biathlon, organised by the International Biathlon Union. Andrea Henkel
Andrea Burke, née Henkel (born 10 December 1977) is a retired German professional biathlete and the younger sister of Manuela Henkel, a successful cross-country skier. She trained at SV Großbreitenbach. Andrea Henkel started out as a cross-country skier but later specialised in biathlon when women's biathlon became an Olympic sport. Since the 1998/99 season, she was a regular member of the German team in the Biathlon World Cup. After several top-ten results, she could win her first World Cup event in 1999, her second year. She was most successful in the 2006/07 season, which she finished first in the overall standings. Henkel has won four Olympic medals: one gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in the 15 km individual, and a gold (2002), silver (2006) and bronze (2010) medal in relay competitions. Teja Gregorin
Teja Gregorin (born 29 June 1980 in Ljubljana, SFR Yugoslavia) is a retired Slovenian biathlete. Career She was a member of the Slovenian biathlon team from 2002 to 2017, having been a cross-country skier before that. Her best result in the Biathlon World Cup is 2nd place in the 15 km Individual race in the World Championships held in Pyeongchang, Korea during the 2008–09 season. At the 2012 World Championships, Gregorin won the silver medal at the mixed relay, together with Andreja Mali, Klemen Bauer and Jakov Fak. The Slovenian biathlete was the only competitor who failed the 2017 doping retests from the 2010 Winter Olympics. In October 2017, the International Biathlon Union said that two samples given by Teja Gregorin tested positive for GHRP-2, a banned substance which stimulates the body to produce more growth hormone, in samples taken the week before competition started. Olga Alekseyevna Zaitseva (; born 16 May 1978) is a former Russian biathlete. She began her career in 1994. After not competing in the 2014–15 season, Zaitseva announced her retirement on 24 January 2015. Shortly afterwards she announced that she had been appointed as caretaker head coach of the Russian biathlon team. Record Olympic Games Zaitseva has won two gold medals and one silver medal at the Winter Olympic Games. On 1 December 2017, she was disqualified from the 2014 Winter Olympics for doping offences. Marie Dorin Habert (born 19 June 1986) is a retired French biathlete. Career She became junior world champion in relay (2004 and 2005). She represented France at the 2010 Winter Olympics. She was also on the bronze medal-winning French relay team at the Biathlon World Championships 2009. Dorin won a bronze in the women's 7.5 km sprint on 13 February 2010 and a silver in the relay. She won her first individual world cup victory at the 2015 world championships in Kontiolahti, Finland, in the sprint event, which was her first World Champion title as well. Magdalena Gwizdoń (born 4 August 1979) is a Polish biathlete, born in Cieszyn. She is the record holder for the women for the most IBU Biathlon World Cup starts with 529 and second overall after Ole Einar Björndalen. Career Gwizdoń competed in the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics for Poland. Her best finish was 7th, as part of the 2006 Polish relay team. Her best individual finish was 20th in the 2006 sprint. In 2006, she also finished 21st in the pursuit, 29th in the mass start, and 33rd in the individual. In 2010, she finished 35th in the sprint, 31st in the pursuit, 59th in the individual and 12th as part of the relay team. As of February 2013, her best performance at the Biathlon World Championships is 6th, as part of the 2008 Polish mixed relay team, and again with the 2009 women's relay team. Vita Semerenko (; born 18 January 1986) is a Ukrainian biathlete. She is Olympic champion in women's relay, Olympic medalist and multiple World championships medalist. She is one of the most successful Ukrainian winter athletes. Biathlete Valentyna is her twin sister. Career When she was in the fourth grade of elementary school, she took up cross-country skiing together with her twin sister Valentyna. But later they decided to switch to biathlon. In 2005 she won two medals at Junior World Championships and one at Junior European Championships. Since the competition in Ukrainian national team was quite rigorous, only Valja managed to qualify for 2006 Winter Olympics. In 2005–06 World Cup season she debuted in German Oberhof in women's relay which was her only World Cup race in that season. The 46th Biathlon World Championships was held in Nové Město na Moravě, Czech Republic, from 7 to 17 February 2013. There were a total of 11 competitions: sprint, pursuit, individual, mass start and relay races for both men, women and a mixed relay.
