Defending champion Maria Sharapova defeated Li Na in the final, 4–6, 6–4, 7–6(7–5) to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2012 Italian Open. Maria Yuryevna Sharapova (, ; born 19 April 1987) is a Russian former professional tennis player. She was ranked as the world No. 1 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for 21 weeks.
