2011–12 Colorado Avalanche Season
The 2011–12 Colorado Avalanche season was the 40th overall season for the franchise, the 33rd since joining the National Hockey League (NHL), and 17th since relocating to Colorado. The Avalanche failed to qualify for the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs, finishing seven points behind the eighth-placed Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference. Off-Season On June 16, 2011, the Avalanche promoted former player Adam Deadmarsh to assistant coach. Deadmarsh will take Steve Konowalchuk's place behind the bench, as Konowalchuk has accepted the head coaching position for the Western Hockey League's Seattle Thunderbirds. Captain Adam Foote retired. Regular season The Avalanche retired Peter Forsberg's number 21 jersey on opening night, October 8. Western Conference (NHL)
The Western Conference () is one of two conferences in the National Hockey League (NHL) used to divide teams. Its counterpart is the Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference. History Originally named the Clarence Campbell Conference (or Campbell Conference for short), it was created in 1974–75 NHL season, 1974 when the NHL realigned its teams into two conferences and four divisions. Because the new conferences and divisions had little to do with North American geography, geographical references were removed. The conferences and divisions were re-aligned in 1981–82 NHL season, 1981 to better reflect the geographical locations of the teams, but the existing names were retained with the Campbell Conference becoming the conference for the NHL's westernmost teams. Adam Deadmarsh
Adam Richard Deadmarsh (born May 10, 1975) is a Canadians, Canadian-born Americans, American former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League, NHL with the Quebec Nordiques, Colorado Avalanche, and Los Angeles Kings. Deadmarsh was later a video coordinator and assistant coach with the Avalanche, before concussion issues forced him to step down after the season, nine years after his playing career ended for the same reason. Deadmarsh won the Stanley Cup in 1996 Stanley Cup Finals, 1996 with the Colorado Avalanche - however his name was misspelled as "Deadmarch". It was later corrected, marking the first correction on the Cup. Daniel Winnik
Daniel Spencer Winnik (born March 6, 1985) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey winger. He played 11 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) and played his final six seasons in Switzerland for Genève-Servette HC. Playing career After two seasons in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League (OPJHL) with the Wexford Raiders, Winnik joined the college hockey ranks with the University of New Hampshire of Hockey East. Following his freshman year, Winnik was drafted 265th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. He found his scoring touch with the Wildcats in his sophomore year, scoring 18 goals for 40 points and was one of UNH's best in being named to the NCAA Northeast Regional All-Tournament team. Kyle Quincey (born August 12, 1985) is a Canadians, Canadian former professional ice hockey Defenseman (ice hockey), defenseman. Ryan O'Byrne
Ryan David O'Byrne (born July 19, 1984) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 2007 to 2013 with the Montreal Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche and the Toronto Maple Leafs. During this time, O'Byrne founded the Ryan O'Byrne Charity Camp, a non-profit hockey camp for youth. Peter Forsberg
Peter Mattias Forsberg (; born 20 July 1973) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey player and former assistant general manager of Modo Hockey. Nicknamed "Peter the Great" and "Foppa", Forsberg was known for his on-ice vision and physical play, and is considered one of the greatest players of all time. Adam Foote
Adam David Vernon Foote (born July 10, 1971) is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and former player who is the head coach for the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was also the former head coach of the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League. He was best known for his physical presence and gritty play as a stay-at-home defenceman. Foote was drafted out of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) 22nd overall in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft by the Quebec Nordiques.
