2010 US Open – Women's Singles
Defending champion Kim Clijsters defeated Vera Zvonareva in the final, 6–2, 6–1 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2010 US Open. It was her third US Open singles title and third major singles title overall. It was her third non-consecutive US Open title, having won on her last two appearances in 2005 and 2009 (she did not play in 2006 due to injury, and was retired from the sport in 2007 and 2008). World No. 1 and three-time champion Serena Williams withdrew from the tournament due to a foot surgery sustained from an exhibition match. Caroline Wozniacki was in contention to gain the top ranking by winning the title, but lost to Zvonareva in the semifinals. Kim Antonie Lode Clijsters (; born 8 June 1983) is a Belgian former professional tennis player. She was ranked as the world No. 1 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for 20 weeks, and as the world No. 1 in women's doubles for 4 weeks, having held both rankings simultaneously in 2003. She won 41 singles titles and 11 doubles titles on the WTA Tour, including four singles majors and two doubles majors (both partnering Ai Sugiyama), as well as three singles titles at the Tour Finals. She was ranked world No. 2 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), in July 2012. María José Martínez Sánchez
María José Martínez Sánchez (; born 12 August 1982) is a Spanish former professional tennis player. In singles, she won five WTA Tour titles, her biggest being a Premier 5 title at the 2010 Italian Open where she defeated two former world No. 1 players, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Janković, en route to the title. Zheng Jie (born 5 July 1983) is a Chinese former professional tennis player. In May 2009, she achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 15.
