2010 New Year Honours
The New Year Honours 2010 were announced on 31 December 2009 in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Cook Islands, Barbados, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Saint Lucia, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Christopher and NevisSaint Christopher and Nevis and other Commonwealth realms to celebrate the year passed and mark the beginning of 2010. The 2010 New Year Honours were unusual in that none of the 121 Members of Parliament (MPs) who had announced their retirement at the next general election received honours. This was perceived to be a reaction to a series of parliamentary scandals in 2009 which had diminished the public opinion of politicians. There were few honours for people from the financial services sector either, after the AIG bonus payments controversy. New Year Honours
The New Year Honours is a part of the British honours system, with New Year's Day, 1 January, being marked by naming new members of orders of chivalry and recipients of other official honours. A number of other Commonwealth realms also mark this day in this way. The awards are presented by or in the name of the reigning monarch, currently King Charles III or his vice-regal representative. British honours are published in supplements to the ''London Gazette''. Honours have been awarded at New Year since at least 1890, in which year a list of Queen Victoria's awards was published by the ''London Gazette'' on 2 January. There was no honours list at New Year 1902, as a list had been published on the new King's birthday the previous November, but in January 1903 a list was again published, though including only Indian orders until 1909 (while the other orders were announced on the King's birthday in November). Andrew Dillon
Sir Andrew Dillon, (born 9 May 1954) is a British executive, who was chief executive of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) from 1999 to 2020. His earlier career was spent as an administrator and manager in the National Health Service (NHS). Early life Dillon was born on 9 May 1954 in Sale, Cheshire, England. He was educated at St Ambrose College, an all-boys grammar school in Hale Barns, Cheshire, and at North Cheshire College of Further Education. He studied at the University of Manchester, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. Career Dillon joined the National Health Service (NHS) after graduating from university. Sir Ralph Kohn (9 December 1927 – 11 November 2016) was a British medical scientist, recipient of the Queen's Award for Export Achievement for his work in the pharmaceutical industry. Early life Ralph Kohn was born in Leipzig on 9 December 1927 into a family of Orthodox Jews. His father, Marcus Kohn, ran a successful textile business, and the family occupied a large, comfortable house in the city centre. In 1933, however, Marcus Kohn, alarmed at the rise of Nazi anti-Semitism, moved his family to Amsterdam. Sir Mark Ellis Powell Jones (born 5 February 1951) is a British art historian, numismatist and museum director. He was director of the Victoria and Albert Museum from 2001 to 2011, and then master of St Cross College, Oxford from 2011 to 2016. Early life Jones was born on 5 February 1951. He is the son of John Ernest Powell-Jones (or Powell-Jones) and writer/historian, Ann Paludan, and grand nephew of actor Robert Newton. Sir John Stranger Holman (born 16 September 1946) is an English chemist and academic. He is emeritus professor of chemistry at the University of York, senior advisor in education at the Gatsby Foundation, founding director of the National STEM Learning Centre, Chair of the Bridge Group, past president of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and of The Association for Science Education (ASE).
