2009–10 South African Premiership
The 2009–10 South African Premiership season, known as the ABSA Premiership for sponsorship purposes, and also commonly referred to as the PSL after the governing body, was the fourteenth since its establishment in 1996. Supersport United were the defending champions, having won their second premier league title in the 2008–09 season. The campaign began in August 2009, and ended in March 2010. A total of 16 teams competed in the league. SuperSport United were crowned champions for the third successive time two matches before the end despite losing to Bidvest Wits (1–2) in the last match. South African Premiership
The South African Premiership, also known as the Betway Premiership for sponsorship reasons, and commonly referred to as the PSL after its governing body, is a professional soccer league in South Africa and the highest level of the South African soccer league system. It has been organised since 1996. The 2024–25 season started on 14 September 2024, Mamelodi Sundowns successfully defended the title in 2025 which they've held continuously since the 2017–18 season. History The league was founded in 1996 after an agreement between the National Soccer League and the remnants of the National Professional Soccer League. It is stated on its website that the former name still exists today, but for legal purposes, with the ''Premier Soccer League'' being its trade name. Charles Mopeli Stadium
Charles Mopeli Stadium is located in Phuthaditjhaba, South Africa. It was mostly used by the now defunct Free State Stars F.C., Free State Stars, and African Warriors F.C., African Warriors when they were in the National First Division before their relegation in 2015–16 National First Division, 2015–16. The stadium has a capacity of 35,000. The stadium also hosted the Nedbank Cup fixture between Soweto giants Orlando Pirates F.C., Orlando Pirates and Maluti FET College F.C., Maluti FET College. By 2021, the stadium was derelict, with the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality stating that they intended to refurbish it. Thanda Royal Zulu
Thanda Royal Zulu was a South African football club based in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal. History The club started after a Swedish consortium that included Sven-Goran Eriksson bought the franchise from Benoni Premier United at the end of the 2006–07 season. The new owners moved the franchise from Benoni to KwaZulu-Natal. They played their home games at Richards Bay Stadium in Richards Bay having previously played their home games at the Hammarsdale Stadium in Hammarsdale. In 2010 the club moved its headquarters from Durban to Richards Bay. The club's nickname ''Amabhubesi'' was Zulu for ''Lions'' while ''Thanda'' means ''love''. Moroka Swallows Football Club (often referred to as Swallows or The Birds) is a South African professional football club based in Soweto, Johannesburg, in the Gauteng province. Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club (simply known as Sundowns) is a South African professional football club based in Mamelodi, Pretoria in the Gauteng province that plays in the Premiership, the first tier of South African football league system. Kaizer Chiefs Football Club (often known as Chiefs) is a South African professional football club based in Naturena, Johannesburg South, that plays in the Premiership. Lamontville Golden Arrows F.C. are a South African soccer club based in Durban that plays in the Premiership. History It was founded in 1943 in the streets of Lamontville, a township in Durban. The club played in the defunct National Professional Soccer League in the 1970s until they were relegated in 1976. They played in the Second Division thereafter until 1980 when they were embroiled in a soccer scandal and thrown out of the National Professional Soccer League. Free State Stars Football club was a South African professional soccer club based in Bethlehem, Free State that played in the National First Division. Formerly known as Makwane Computer Stars, Fairway Stars and Qwa Qwa Stars, their most significant honour was winning the 1994 Coca-Cola Cup and 2017–18 Nedbank Cup.
