2009–10 Maltese Second Division
The 2009–10 Maltese Second Division started in September 2009 and will end in May 2010. Rabat Ajax and Senglea Athletic were relegated from the 2008–09 Maltese First Division. Gzira United, Gharghur and Zurrieq were promoted from the 2008–09 Maltese Third Division. The ''Maltese Second Division 2009–10'' was won by Lija Athletic. The runners-up were St. Andrews. Gharghur and Gozo FC were relegated. Santa Venra Lightning were also relegated after losing in the relegation playoffs. Maltese Second Division
The Maltese Second Division (also known as the BOV Second Division due to sponsorship reasons) was the third-highest division in Maltese football until 2020 when it was merged with the Maltese Third Division to create the National Amateur League. Structure 13 clubs formed the league and each played every other club twice. Three points were awarded for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. At the end of the season, the top two teams were promoted to the First Division, while the bottom two were relegated to the Third Division. 2010–11 Maltese Third Division
The Maltese Third Division 2010–11 (known as BOV 3rd Division 2010-11 due to sponsorship reasons) was the 11th season of the Maltese Third Division. The season began on 26 September 2010 and concluded on 15 May 2011 with the promotion play-offs final. Gozo, Gharghur and Santa Venera were relegated from the Maltese Second Division 2009-10. This is the debut season of Marsaskala. League Changes The Maltese Third Division is divided into two sections; Section A consisting of 11 teams and Section B with 10 teams. The winners of each section will win promotion and face each other in a championship play-off to decide the Maltese Third Division champions. For the 2010–11 season, teams placing 2nd and 3rd in both sections will be promoted to the Maltese Second Division due to the change in the Maltese league format. The 2010–11 Maltese First Division (also known as 2010–11 BOV 1st Division due to sponsorship reasons) began on 23 October 2010 and ended on 1 May 2011. Due to a in-season change regarding the league system, the third-placed team of this season will be promoted to the Maltese Premier League, along with the regular two promotees. The Maltese Third Division 2009–10 (known as BOV 3rd Division 2009–10 due to sponsorship reasons) was the 10th season of the Maltese Third Division. It started in September 2009 and ended in May 2010 with the promotion play-offs. Naxxar Lions, Mgarr United and Marsa were relegated from the 2008–09 Maltese Second Division. The division is divided into two sections (Section A and Section B), both with 10 teams. The winners of each section faced each other in a play-off where the winner was crowned as champion of the division, but both teams were still given the promotion. Mgarr United won Section A, while Zejtun Corinthians won Section B after a decider with Naxxar Lions. In the Championship play-off Zejtun bet Mgarr 4–3 to win the Division. In the promotion play-offs semi-final Gudja United beat Santa Venera, who finished 10th in the Second Division. In the final Naxxar Lions defeated Gudja on penalties to win promotion. Naxxar Lions Football Club is a professional football club from the town of Naxxar in northern Malta. Their historical and arch-rivals are Mosta FC. A match between Naxxar Lions and Mosta FC, is known as the derby of the north, but because there are other derbies in northern Malta it is also known as the Northern Classic. Balzan Youths
Balzan Football Club is a Maltese football club from the village of Balzan that competes in the Maltese Challenge League, the second tier of Maltese football. The club was founded as ''Balzan Youths'' in 1937 and played in the top division between 2010 and 2025. They were renamed ''Balzan FC'' in June 2012. Balzan has qualified for the UEFA Europa League for five consecutive seasons (2015–16 to 2019–20). The club finished as runners-up in the Maltese Premier League in the 2016–17 and 2017–18 seasons and were finalists of the 2015–16 Maltese FA Trophy, which they lost on penalties to Sliema Wanderers after a goalless draw in the regular time.
