Season 2009–10 saw Greenock Morton compete in their third consecutive season in the First Division, in which they finished 8th after a last day victory over Ayr United which relegated the visitors. Story of the season May After the end of the 2008–09 season, Kieran McAnespie (signed for amateur side Milngavie Wanderers), Jamie Stevenson (signed for East Stirlingshire), Chris Smith (signed for Dumbarton) and Jon Newby (signed for Northwich Victoria) were all released. Brian Graham returned from his loan spell at East Stirlingshire, where he finished as the Third Division's top scoring forward. Greenock Morton F
Greenock (; ; , ) is a town in Inverclyde, Scotland, located in the west central Lowlands of Scotland. The town is the administrative centre of Inverclyde Council. It is a former burgh of barony, burgh within the Counties of Scotland, historic county of Renfrewshire (historic), Renfrewshire, and forms part of a contiguous urban area with Gourock to the west and Port Glasgow to the east. Kieran McAnespie
Kieran Liam McAnespie (born 11 September 1979) is a football manager and former player. Capable of playing as a full-back or winger, he appeared in the Scottish Premier League for St Johnstone and Hearts. Born in England as a teenager he represented the Scotland U21 national team internationally McAnespie was manager of Clydebank but left when he became a fireman in 2019. He managed Cumbernauld United from 2020 to 2021. McAnespie then took up a coaching role at Darvel. Playing career McAnespie graduated from the youth ranks at St Johnstone, making his first team début against Clydebank on 4 February 1997. He made one further appearance that season as Saints won promotion to the Premier Division. He scored on both occasions. He went on to make 50 league appearances for the Saints, notably scoring in wins against both Celtic and Rangers in the 1998–99 season. Bryn Halliwell
Bryn Stephen Halliwell (born 1 October 1980) is an English former football goalkeeper who is a goalkeeping coach at Caledonian Braves. Halliwell started his career in the youth team at London side Wimbledon, before moving in the Scottish Football League with Clyde. After leaving the Cumbernauld side in 2005, Halliwell spent the next six years playing for seven different Scottish clubs, culminating in a loan spell back at Clyde from former rivals Partick Thistle. Neil MacFarlane (footballer)
Neil MacFarlane (born 10 October 1977) is a Scottish professional football coach and former player, who is assistant first team coach of club Brentford and head coach of Scotland U19. MacFarlane played as a defensive midfielder for a number of clubs at all four levels of the Scottish league system. After his retirement as a player in 2011, he became a coach and was appointed to his first managerial role at English non-League club Kidderminster Harriers in 2018. One year later, he was appointed head coach of Brentford B. He served in the role until July 2025, when he was promoted into the role of assistant first team coach. Scottish Football League Third Division
The Scottish Football League Third Division was the fourth tier of the Scottish football league system between 1994 and 2013. History The Scottish football league system had operated with three divisions in the Scottish Football League (SFL) from 1975. In 1994, as part of reconstruction to allow the admission of Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ross County to the league, the SFL was recalibrated to give four divisions of 10 teams. The fourth tier was named the Third Division. In 1998, the Premier Division (top flight) clubs broke away to form the Scottish Premier League (SPL). Brian Graham (footballer)
Brian Graham (born 23 November 1987) is a Scottish football striker and coach who plays for club Falkirk. A striker, Graham spent five years at Greenock Morton after joining the club from Hillington. Whilst at Morton he spent a season on loan at East Stirlingshire in the Third Division. He then played for Raith Rovers, moving from there to Dundee United in 2013. After spending most of the 2014–15 season on loan to St Johnstone, he joined Ross County in June 2015, signed for Hibernian in August 2016 – helping them win the 2016–17 Scottish Championship – then moved to English club Cheltenham Town in August 2017. Graham returned to Ross County in August 2018 and subsequently joined Partick Thistle in 2020, going on to become team captain and one of the club's most prolific goal-scorers, netting exactly 100 goals in 207 appearances. Jonathan Philip Robert Newby (born 28 November 1978) is an English former footballer, who played as a striker, and manager. Career Known for his lightning pace, Newby began his career with Liverpool, and was involved in their FA Youth Cup win of 1996. He made four appearances for Liverpool (only one of which was in the Premier League against Middlesbrough), and was loaned out to Crewe Alexandra (March 2000), Sheffield United ( August 2000), and Bury (February 2001). This final loan move was made permanent, with Bury getting him on a free transfer on 20 March 2001. Chris Smith (footballer Born 1988)
Chris "Junior" Smith (born 31 August 1988 in Glasgow) is a Scottish footballer who plays as a defender. Smith started his career in the youth teams of Partick Thistle and Rangers before making his first senior appearances in the Scottish Football League with Greenock Morton. He also played for Dumbarton, Ayr United, Falkirk, Stirling Albion and Clyde.
