2009–10 Edmonton Oilers Season
The 2009–10 Edmonton Oilers season was the team's 38th season of play, its 31st as a member of the National Hockey League (NHL). The 2009–10 season was one of the poorest in franchise history as the Oilers finished last in the NHL. The team's 62 points were the second-lowest point total in franchise history (the lowest point total was 60 points obtained back in 1992–93). However, despite the misery endured that season, the Oilers were compensated on April 13, 2010, when they won the 2010 NHL Draft Lottery to pick first overall for the first time in franchise history. This season the Oilers missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for the fourth consecutive season having not appeared in a playoff game since Game 7 of the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals against the Carolina Hurricanes. Western Conference (NHL)
The Western Conference () is one of two conferences in the National Hockey League (NHL) used to divide teams. Its counterpart is the Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference. History Originally named the Clarence Campbell Conference (or Campbell Conference for short), it was created in 1974–75 NHL season, 1974 when the NHL realigned its teams into two conferences and four divisions. Because the new conferences and divisions had little to do with North American geography, geographical references were removed. The conferences and divisions were re-aligned in 1981–82 NHL season, 1981 to better reflect the geographical locations of the teams, but the existing names were retained with the Campbell Conference becoming the conference for the NHL's westernmost teams. Nikolai Khabibulin
Nikolai Alexandrovich Khabibulin (; rus, Николай Александрович Хабибулин, p=xəbʲɪˈbulʲɪn, born January 13, 1973) is a Russian former professional ice hockey goaltender. Known by the nickname "The Bulin Wall", he spent the majority of his playing career in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Winnipeg Jets (1972–1996), Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes, Phoenix Coyotes, Chicago Blackhawks, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Edmonton Oilers. Khabibulin excelled at the international level, winning two Olympic medals (Gold Medal, gold and Bronze Medal, bronze) and was named Goaltender, Best Goaltender at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Ladislav Šmíd
Ladislav Šmíd (, born February 1, 1986) is a Czech former professional ice hockey defenceman. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. Playing career As a youth, Šmíd played in the 2000 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a team from Chomutov. Šmíd was drafted in the first round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, ninth overall, by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. He played junior hockey for HC Liberec Junior in the 2001–02 season, and split the following three seasons between HC Liberec Junior and the professional HC Bílí Tygři Liberec. Andrew Cogliano
Andrew Cogliano (born June 14, 1987) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played for the Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks, and Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League (NHL). On December 31, 2013, Cogliano became the 20th player in NHL history to play 500 consecutive games, and only the fifth to do so from the beginning of his NHL career. On November 4, 2017, Cogliano played in his 800th consecutive game, placing him in fourth place on the NHL's most consecutive games played list. The Ottawa Senators (), officially the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club and colloquially known as the Sens, are a professional ice hockey team based in Ottawa. The Senators compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference. Dany Heatley
Daniel James Heatley (born January 21, 1981) is a German-born Canadian former professional ice hockey winger (ice hockey), winger. Originally drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers second overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, he won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the National Hockey League (NHL) rookie of the year in 2001–02 NHL season, 2002. However, Heatley's time with the Thrashers was derailed when he was at the wheel in a car crash in September 2003 that killed teammate Dan Snyder (ice hockey), Dan Snyder. Heatley, who was also seriously injured but eventually made a full recovery, pled guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide and received probation. Wayne Fleming (July 6, 1950 – March 25, 2013) was a Canadian ice hockey coach. He served as assistant coach in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Philadelphia Flyers, Phoenix Coyotes, New York Islanders and Tampa Bay Lightning. He also served as a head coach for Leksands IF, EV Landshut and Avangard Omsk in Europe, and as both assistant and head coach for Team Canada in international tournaments. Tom Renney
Thomas Renney (born March 1, 1955) is a Canadian former ice hockey coach and executive. He served as the chief executive officer of Hockey Canada from 2014 to 2022, and was previously an associate coach with the National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings and also served as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, and Edmonton Oilers. Renney began his coaching career in the Western Hockey League (WHL), capturing a Memorial Cup in his two-year stint with the Kamloops Blazers. Craig MacTavish
Craig MacTavish (born August 15, 1958) is a Canadian professional ice hockey executive and former player, formerly an assistant coach with the St. Louis Blues. He played center for 17 seasons in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and St. Louis Blues, winning the Stanley Cup four times (1987, 1988, 1990, 1994). He was the last NHL player not to wear a helmet during games., although Mark Messier would be the last player who was not required to wear a helmet. The Carolina Hurricanes (colloquially known as the Canes) are a professional ice hockey team based in Raleigh, North Carolina. 2006 Stanley Cup Finals
The 2006 Stanley Cup Finals was the championship series of the National Hockey League's (NHL) 2005–06 season, and the culmination of the 2006 Stanley Cup playoffs. The first Stanley Cup Finals since 2004 after a lockout canceled the entirety of the 2004–05 season, it was contested between the Eastern Conference champion Carolina Hurricanes and the Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers. It was Carolina's second appearance in the Finals, the other being in 2002, a loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
